If I only use 5.1 out of 7.1 not turn off surround back channels, would it improve other channels amplification? What happens to DTS-ES dvds? Would that be matrixed into surround channel? Would it still sound better than 5.1 amp?

Regardless of whether you have the back surround channels turned ON or OFF, if you don't have any surround speakers connected, then you're not drawing any additional load off the power supply. Well, maybe a small amount for bias purposes, but that's hardly anything. I've owned the 3801 for almost a year (with full 7.1 setup), and IMHO EX/ES soundtracks are a definite enhancement over 5.1. However, I don't much care for using the 7.1 setup for 5.1 material. It seems to smear the surround channels a degrade the quality of the 5.1 presentation.
