My favorite electronics store is having a sale next Wednesday night and I have decided that will be the day I pick up a new DVD player and it is going to be either the 2200 or the 2900 and I really need some input. I was prepared to spend the $$ for the 2900 but if the 2200 will fit the bill I won't object to saving the money. Any thoughts?
Please help

I'd save the money and buy the 2200, but who know's how critical you are about you're equipment. From what I've heard the video is almost identical; basically the only advantages of the 2900 are the build quality and audio for DVD-A/SACD. There's plenty you can do with the $400 difference.

Is there a significant difference in the audio between the '2200 and '2900? I am looking at the '2200 for DVD-Audio in my second stereo system, but would entertain the '2900 if there is a lot to be gained there.

I've yet to see/hear the 2900, but I do really like my 2200. For the extra $400, you can upgrade something else.

IMHO, the denon sounds great with CDs and SACDs. I've yet to hear DVD-Audio (can't find a disc I'm interested in).

In the little research I have done, the differences between the 2200 and 2900 are as follows.

The DVD-2900...

1. Uses DSD-1790 vs DSD-1791 Audio DACs on the 2200. This effects your Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), Dynamic Range and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD+N).

2. Has an RS-232C port to support AMX, Crestron integrated control system

3. Has a new loading mechanism for suppression of vibration

4. DVD mechanism divided into 2-box construction to mitigate vibration

5. THD+N of 0.0009% vs 0.001% of 2200. SNR of 118 dB vs 115 dB. Dynamic Range of 110 dB vs 106 dB.

6. Larger chassis (about 7.3lb heavier, 1.2" taller and 1.3" deeper than 2200)

7. The 2900 does not seem to support DVD+R/RW for DVD-Video Recording Mode, whereas the 2200 does (I can't seem to confirm this. While the documentation does not list +R/RW for the 2900, I did read that someone tested it and it worked).

This is all I have been able to find. I'm not sure how the DSD-1790 differs from the 1791. But, I found an excellent technical page directly from the manufacturer (TI) on the DSD1791. Couldn't find anything on the 1790 to compare it to. Here's the link you'll need to copy and paste to your browser since I can't post URLs yet: focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/dsd1791.html

Personally, I don't think the 2900 is worth the difference in price. The next step from a 2200 for me would be the 5900. However, a real life test would put this issue to bed, but I doubt the 2200 would dissappoint anyone for $599.
