I'm shopping for a HT system that will initially be 5.1, but I would eventually like to move up to 7.1. I'd decided on the 2802 but it looks like it might just be 6.1. Will the 2802 give me 7.1 and if so, will it be that same as what the 3802 has (other than the extra power of course)? The 3802 is out of my budget so I'd have to wait until the next line comes out so the prices on the 3802 will drop. The sub I'm looking at is a SVS PCi powered sub if that makes any difference.

You have it right. The 2802 is 6.1, and the 3802 is 7.1. They are both very nice receivers at their price points.

If by 7.1 you mean 7 discrete amplified channels then yes, 2802 has 6. There currently are not any standard 7.1 software though. So since there is no processing involved, you could also use the pre-outs on the 2802 along with a cheap stereo two channel amp to power the rears. You could also simply wire them in series off the 6th channel (or parallel depending on the type of speaker/room size/how loud you'll have 'em/etc.).

cheers,
