i just got my first home theater system and i like it a lot. i have a small dvd collection, but i am working on expanding it. i really like testing my home theater system out, and i was wondering what some suggestions would be for some dvds that would really give my speakers a workout and help me convince the people that come to my house that i didnt waste my money on this. i am not talking about the dvds that everyone knows for their great audio quality (such as fight club and phantom menace) but ones that arent quite as popular. one that i have found that falls under this category is ronin. i thought that movie had unbelievable audio quality (and not just in the races) well thanks for the input.

City Lights (Excellent video, PERFECT PCM 2.0 track...it'll shake the support beams!) [No edge enhancement whatsoever...despite nearly 100% of the film having EE-prone scenes!)

Being There (Excellent video, excellent 1.0 mono!)

Arsenic and Old Lace (Same thing)

It Happened One Night (While the print has a few unavoidable flaws, the quality is amazing. The sound is exceptionally clear for a 1934 movie)

New release "The Others" is a rather quiet film, but has some superb directional sound effects that will give your surround sound a good demo.

Check out the scenes in "Traffic" (American version) featuring the musical score. It's subtle, ambient, and enveloping with good bass extension.

Ronin is great. Heat is a great one as well. The 13th Warrior also has good surround effects.

Baraka. Shot in 70mm, the video is stunning. My ISF calibrator saw it at my home and now uses it for demo material. His other clients, in turn, bought it. Sound is a fabulous soundtrack featuring the likes of Dead Can Dance. The total effect is hypnotic.

For sound: Midsummer Night's Dream (Calista Flockhart version)- the scenes in the woods will make you feel like you've been transported into the forest. Highly immersive, and a break from the usual action movie demos.

Mothman Prophecies- a terrific, aggressive sound mix that's terrifying all by itself.

Castaway. Wonderful atmospheric sound effects (wind, rain, surf, fire, etc.). Very effective.

Another good one with subtle surround usage is The Gift.

I couldn't pass this by without mentioning my favorite - The Fifth Element. Dunno if the superbit is better, but my copy just kicks so much arse.

The Courage Under Fire DTS DVD has become one of my top 3 demo DVD's not only for it's outstanding video quality but especially for it unbelievable audio track! The tank battle in the beginning of the film is a bass freaks dream! And the Helicopter fight scenes are the best sounding helicopter scenes I have ever heard! If you don't have it grab it ASAP! You won't be sorry!
