Being the complete XM addict that I am I went ahead and picked up the Delphi Boombox over lunch at BB along w/ rechargeable batteries.

I am going camping next week and had envisioned bringing my home kit and running it to my Tivoli PAL radio for amplification but I would have to mess with bringing extra wires etc and have to have the whole thing plugged in anyway.

I already know I will be doing a "handle mod" tonight (Lowes here I come). I'll post pics and initial impressions when its done :)

Handle mod is done :)

It took me a while to figure out how to open the thing - you have to pull on the speaker grates and they come off.

Also the handle I picked (because it was big and more handle like) had to be cut/ground down to fit the angle of the case. I used some threadlock in the holes to keep everything secure.

I haven't listened long enough to report on its sound but I can see where more headroom in the volume dept would be handy - I've got it at 18 now for quiet room listening...

Chris,

Awesome handle Bro! Me likes ;)

Hmmm I wonder... With some fuddling the volume issue could
be cured.. Apex has these 12Watt Mini JBL Amps that run off
of DC (not sure what voltage though) if you could build in
some sort of rechargeable area for a LiOn battery add in
the 12 Watt Amp and a good pair of Tang Band full rangers
(all could be done "on the cheap") and it should make a huge
improvement! Also I am sure some dynamat on the interior
walls of the boombox wouldn't hurt... Hmmm... An Audiophile
Boombox... It'd be a first!

Okay I did some research...

Here's the JBL 12 Watt Stereo Amp at ApexJr.

Runs on 9 to 12V DC... Cost$10.00
http://www.apexjr.com/JBL12.htm

Here's a nice Tang Band full range at Parts Express..

This is a 3" but PE also has Tang Band 4" also... Cost $14.00Ea

Add in a decent battery to power it.. Heck the internal
power of the Boombox may be enough, I don't know what kind
of batteries or how many it takes.. This could be a neat
little mod though :)

Ok I'm off the deep edge.

The sound was good - fine for background music but a bit muddy and lacking in range IMHO. So after reading on another forum they said that replacing the speakers makes a big difference so I've ordered a pair and will let you know how it goes (and take pictures of the process).

One of the guys at work uses a pair of powered speakers to listen to the Delphi head unit. I haven't heard it yet, but he says it's great for his office environment. I don't think he has any dance parties in his office, so large amounts of volume and bass aren't needed.

Ohh yeah you could easily use powered PC speakers.. My Altec
Lansing ACS31's would sound fantastic with my Delphi.. If
my dang volume knob wasn't going south on me...
