Looks like I just found a good black LCD with DVI to go as a secondary display for the HTPC I'm building. I couldn't pass it up. Hopefully I won't have to wait like I did for the Sony DVD-RW/+RW burner deal Dell had.

Oh God! My credit card is melting!

I know what you mean about the credit cards. Ron emailed me this morning to let me know he picked up one of these too. Did you use the Deals Page to order it? I can't believe the price on this unit. Normally it goes for around $1,500.

Nice price! Can anyone recommend a sub-$300 15" LCD that is of quality? I plan on putting it in my theater on a side table to do some web surfing while watching TV. Anyone do the same?

how are the dell FP series LCD monitors compared to other brand names like Samsung and NEC (performance wise, ease-of use, etc) ??

Chuck:

From those people that I have read that have owned one of these over the past year the 1600 x 1200 screen is great with the 20 inch screen. If I had the money I would be picking up one of these myself.

Scott:

They also have some deals on their 15 inch LCD units too.

Chuck,

I did some checking on the UltraS Dell monitors we have at work, and by FCC ID it seems they were OEM'd by Samsung.

Chuck C:

It depends. Different models perform very differently. I like the 2000fp the most, but the 1900fp is a strong performer as well. The 1800fp doesn't seem quite as good, and exhibits some ghosting during fast material. The 1702fp, despite its specs, seem better than the 1800fp. In general, they're very in line with the performance of most of the late model Samsungs, and better than the vast majority of the NEC models.

Vince:

The 1900fp is OEM'd by Samsung. The 2000fp by BenQ. The E171FP by Samsung. The 1702fp by Samsung. No clue about the 1800fp.

I think we have the UltraSharp 1504 and 1702s, and both came up from the same manufacturing plant on FCC id search.

Would it be safe to say that the 1504/1702 would be the "same" as the samsung 151p/171p or the 152T/172T?? The contrast and rise/fall times seem to match the P series and they are similar in case style.

I've been considering picking up a pair of 151p for my audio editing PC-- and I think I can get the 1504 cheaper through a corporate account at work...

I'll tell you what, that 19" Dell looks like a sweet piece. Maybe santa will have an extra one for me. Doesn't text look too small on a 20" @1600x1200? I think 1280x1024 on a 19" would be optimum.

Depends on your eyes. I prefer 96 DPI, which is considered normal in most operating systems.
15" LCD
  • 1024 x 768: 85 DPI
  • 1280 x 1024: 107 DPI
17" LCD
  • 1024 x 768: 75 DPI
  • 1280 x 1024: 94 DPI
18.1" LCD
  • 1280 x 1024: 88 DPI
  • 1400 x 1050: 97 DPI
19" LCD
  • 1280 x 1024: 84 DPI
  • 1400 x 1050: 92 DPI
  • 1600 x 1200: 105 DPI
20" LCD
  • 1280 x 1024: 80 DPI
  • 1400 x 1050: 88 DPI
  • 1600 x 1200: 100 DPI

Well, I cancelled my order. Seems Dell is perfectly happy offering next day air - and then have no qualms telling you the unit won't be shipped for another week.
I am a leetle peeved right now.

Hey guys, my LCD arrived today. The thing is enormous. The shipping box looks like it would hold a tower PC.

I haven't hooked it up to a PC yet (my HTPC is waiting on case and motherboard) but I hooked the s-video up to my DirecTiVo to look for dead pixels. I didn't see any.
