Now the only unresolved mystery is who really shot JFK.

That isn't the only one left, there are plenty more, but the public still believes what they have been told, and haven't begun questioning on a large enough scale yet.

Unfortunately, many who know the truth about JFK are long dead now, and the documents that could shed some light on the truth won't be released for another 20 odd years, by which time those reponsible will also be dead, and it won't really matter much.

I love that everyone seems to assume that when a certain amount of time has passed the government will be magically compelled to tell the truth for once. In 20 years (or whatever) they'll just release all the forged paperwork they desire pointing the finger at whatever stooge they deem appropriate.

Heck, there are still conflicting reports concerning the actions involved in the apprehension & death of John Wilkes Booth (such as the attending doctors testimony "The body I was instructed to identify was clearly not the body of John Wilkes Booth. They did however threaten my life if I had written otherwise.") And thats been "covered up" succesfully for 130+ years

I did say that the documents "could" shed light on the truth, not that they actually "would."

We know what people in power want us to know, and what they want us to believe. I don't know that I really would want to know the truth about everything. Spoils the illusion of how great we are as a civilisation and a species.

Very interesting. I thought that Deep Throat's identity would never be revealed.

Ironically Mark Felt was apparently convicted of conspiracy to violate civil rights, but was pardoned by Ronald Reagan shortly after he took office.

Woodward and Bernstein always said they would reveal his identity after his death (if his family gave permission) or if he gave permission himself. Felt is in ill health (as stated by Woodward a few months ago) and decided to reveal himself in Vanity Fair. Woodward then confirmed in a column.

I heard on the radio this morning that part of Felt's motivation may have been because he was pissed off at Nixon for not making him the FBI director after the death of J. Edgar Hoover. It's always interesting how emotions play into things.

What is interesting is how no one really seems too interested in his revelation.

I'm assuming his family convinced him to reveal the truth so they could sell a memoir and pay some bills; but, I think they missed the real money window. Waited too long...

I think those of us who lived through it always suspected there was no romantic "do what's right" type of motivation, however romanticized the book and movie were. Just political backbiting, as was typical of those (or any) times. Besides, it is over now and while I agree Nixon had to go, I don't believe for a second that what happened at Watergate has not happened a thousand times before and/or since.
