"Trouble with Tribbles" author David Gerrold participated in the episode, right down to his cameo appearance (the simplest explanation is at Gerrold's site, which explains that "Gerrold is visible as a red-shirted crewmember in several corridor scenes. In one quick shot, he can be seen playing with a tribble from the original episode. ").
