I was watching this late at night and reluctantly had to shut if off and go to bed. It was during the part where Messiah was on its way to the comet. Prior to that moment was Téa Leone's brief character journey as an investigative reporter cracking a story. It showed her unwittingly (but not witlessly) bluffing herself through what she initially thought was a hackneyed cover-up. She managed to get from "Ellie" to "E.L.E." by relying on her instincts—and also keeping a straight face in front of very powerful people. In a lesser film, this would have been ridiculous (and maybe it is, but it was played well).

So when I picked up on Deep Impact again the next night, I actually skipped backwards to re-watch all of that again. I found it more fascinating than the comet striking the earth. So, in other words, Téa acted her way above an apocalyptic event, which is usually treated as destructo-porn (*cough* Armageddon, 2012, etc. *cough*).

To be honest, I felt Téa Leoni was dull and bland for most of the movie. I don't think I've ever seen her in a movie in which I was pleasantly surprised by her. That said, I agree that she really did manage to pull off that bluff, realizing that she really had no clue and managing to make everyone believe that she -- as the saying goes -- wasn't asking any question that she didn't already know the answer to.

Anyway, I watched this a couple of nights ago, and probably loved it more than I had before.

one a popcorn flick, another a Stephen Spielberg production that could be too serious on plot and boring.
when we have to pay USD$12.50~$20(depending on region) for a entry ticket, which comet crashing earth flick will offer more value?

This one. Armageddon might have been entertaining (for certain values of entertainment) but it was also deeply stupid, even without counting the whole gattling-guns-on-the-rovers business.

Steven Spielberg was only an executive producer on the film. It was a Zanuck/Brown production.

Yeah, it would've been closer to $5-7 at most theaters in those days.

$5-$7? Speak for yourself...

Just watched Deep Impact streaming in 4K from Vudu. This is my favorite disaster movie. Mighty impressed with the picture quality. A seamless blending of 2K CGI and film. Highly recommended.

Agree, and the special effects are good, not just for the time but hold up well today (same with The Core). Many of today's films rely too much on CG and much of it is not very good (particularly when the action is slowed down).

You all making me want to pick this up. These disaster movies came out during my college days and I was a much less discerning viewer, so naturally I gravitated to Armageddon, a film I've not watched since the early 2000s (and I doubt I will watch again). I did see Deep Impact and remember liking it and was surprised that not everyone got a happy ending (as opposed to Bruce Willis who played the typical sole savior character so that everyone else could live). Now that I recall all of that...something tells me DI will resonate more with me today than it did in my 20s.
