I have a Roku Streaming Stick+ that I was previously able to plug into my Onkyo TX-NR686 receiver (bought in 2018) and was hence able to decode the DD and other audio codecs provided by Netflix and other streaming sources. However, a while ago I started to have problems with the Roku device as it frequently dropped the video signal and at other times lost contact with my router, which is across the room (usually with an excellent signa!).

I tried all the device ports on the Onkyo eventually giving up after also trying various fixes. the only solution was to plug it directly into my LG panel and the issue went away. The resulting problem however is I cannot get any decoded Dolby Digital, DTS or whatever coming from the competing content providers.

Does anyone have a suggestion here? The sound now travels down the HDMI ARC from the TV to the receiver and hence not from a legit device port on the receiver. I only get the default "TV" mode on the receiver which is not great. I can only surmise that I either get another Roku (upgrade to an Ultra?) or get another receiver (rather extreme).

I find it interesting that Roku gives no instruction for the option of installing the device in a receiver ONLY one's TV. I presume most people use their monitor's speakers or a sound bar. None of these to my knowledge decode these HD sound streams, only the much smaller (I think) set of users such as us that still employ an AV receiver.

Why should Netflix, Apple TV+, etc. provide these sound platforms if most people can never take advantage of them? Am I really off base here?

Is it possible your LG TV's sound output isn't set to Bitstream?

I checked that and the LG does not have a "bitstream" option for audio output. I select HDMI ARC and the only further setting is for "digital audio" to either "Auto" or "PCM" neither of which made any difference. :(
