I have a toshiba DVD dual disk with a decoder. I have it hooked up to a sony receiver also with a 5.1 decoder. Can I bypass my receiver and go directly to a 5 channel amp?

Paul,
I don't know of any power amps that have volume controls, so bypassing the receiver would mean not having any control over the loudness of your system. I would suspect you'd get maximum volume at all times if you connected your dvd player's 5.1 outputs directly to a power amp.
Also, it's been my experience that Toshiba built in decoders have very limited bass management, not allowing you to choose "small" for center or mains.

I prefer not to push the subwoofers until they're properly run in.
