Well, it is true the numbers are off as 30%+ of the market is not represented by them

I'd say it's a fair sample. The fact that that piece of crap DBZ game sold 700,000 copies is RELALY pissing me off

It's a ratio of hardware to software. If a console has a tie-in ration of 4.7:1, it means the for each console sold, an average of 4.7 games are sold. The higher the better for the console manufacturer. Also referred to as "attach rate."

Edr: Yes, I agree that none of the consoles are going anywhere anytime soon. If anything, these numbers will delay the next generation of hardware here in the US.

The arguing over sales figures is more of a gamfaqs.com thing. So many 15 year-old movers and shakers in the gaming industry populate those boards.

Looks like Metroid joins the list of Gamecube games that didn't come close to delivering the deathblow to Xbox. A 1 million lead for Microsoft. Nintendo needs Zelda to be really big.

Besides Wal-Mart not being represented, these are also US only numbers. Worldwide, it's still 1. PS2, 2. GCN, 3. X-Box. Still, these are impressive numbers. And while I think all 3 will survive, this incredible growth kind of scares me. The last time I remember the industry growing so much was back in 1984. Let's hope the bottom doesn't fall out.

Care to back that up with some facts Todd? I'd be interested in seeing the global numbers now that Xbox is being sold in Korea, virtually a "Japanese console" free area (it will stay that way for a long time to come) that takes online gaming to the very extreme. MS should see some BIG numbers from there this year I think, well hopefully the tie in factor stays a positive number [IMG]. Another interesting factor is Xbox live, it has just been released in Japan and should spark a lot of new interest there.

Oh Dean I do not think Korea is a Japanese Console free Market. They hate the US as much as Japan at this point. I can tell you that Xbox is doing royally shitty over here in Japan. There are just to many games out for PS2 and gamecube(Gamecube has Alot of games out over here). Do not get me wrong Xbox is cool. I like mine, but I have all 3 systems. Thats the way to go. I think there is enough room in the market for all 3 systems to be honest. Now stop arguing about Numbers and what not. And continue gaming.

If you were around during the 64 era, nintendo is making the same hardware mistakes as before. nintendo's games are leagues ahead of microsofts(1st. pty), but the actual console is leagues behind. This causes third parties to not make as many games, and things like no online play and having to buy memory cards for sports games that are blurry because of the funky media costs them. Nintendo is marketing the system right, but it isn't getting enough support so gamers can buy it by itself.

    Japanese Sales figures from http://www.the-magicbox.com/topten.htm

    Hardware Sales Chart

    Total Sales in 2002
    GameBoy Advance - 3,146,900
    PlayStation 2 - 3,511,200
    GameCube - 1,129,300
    Xbox - 312,400
    PSone - 219,000
    SwanCrystal - 112,800
    WonderSwan Color - 121,600
    GameBoy Color - 83,900

Everyone knows that Xbox is getting spanked in Japan. You can probably add at least 500,000 to the GC's total for the 5-6 month lead it had on the Xbox.

DOA:VB will sell well - DOA3 is by far the best selling XBox game in Japan. But it still won't start a massive jump in sales IMO.

I've no idea how popular the Panzer Dragoon series is in Japan... The game's already available I believe - there's also a limited edition set & a limited edition XBox available - but I can't find a recent chart. Last I've got a link to is Jan 6 - 12, which doesn't have a single XBox in the top 50 (it takes 3800 units to get in).

    I can't find historical sales for '95 unfortunately :-(

Yeah, when I saw DOA:VB had these "dating" features built into it, like giving gifts to convince people to join your team or whatever, I thought they were really were aiming it for the Japanese audience at that point.

The only reason DBZ is at #2 for Playstation, is because the market is really clamoring for a good DBZ game. The graphics make the thing look like it was meant for the N64 rather than the Ps2...

But damn,....look at those Nintendo Numbers. This company needs to re-invent itself, and fast. Otherwise XBox may clean it's clock in a year or two, and this is a diehard Nintendo supporter speaking these words..

Also, has anyone noticed how Gamecube advertising seems non existant compared to the other two? Only the Zelda add is now running on the tube, and Best Buy and Comp USA seem to have dropped the Cube from their curcuilars.

Here's hoping things pick up for Nintendo soon.
