Set in Neil Gaiman's Sandman universe, this series follows two British teenage ghosts: Edwin Paine, who was killed in a satanic ritual back in the Edwardian era; and Charles Rowland, a victim of the eighties punk rock scene. Soon after making the acquaintance of Crystal Palace, an amnesiac medium, they find themselves trapped in a town in the Pacific Northwest. Together, the trio solves supernatural mysteries involving the living and the dead, while the boys evade Death and Crystal tries to outmaneuver her demonic stalker.

I'm two episodes in and enjoying it. Even though all three protagonists are young, they've done a lot of living and have very distinct but developed skill sets. While the Pacific Northwest setting was clearly a means to make the show more cheaply in British Columbia, there's a nice sympatico between the region's weirdness and the supernatural weirdness.

The only slight misstep so far was the decision to make Crystal an American; Kassius Nelson is an English actress, and sometimes her accent slips.

I need to watch this. I loved the DBD comics. They previously appeared -- played by different actors -- in Season 3 of Doom Patrol. I believe it was intended to create a spin-off that from show, but it was decided to go in a different direction, hence this series (which has no connection to Doom Patrol).

I just watched the first episode and enjoyed it a lot.

The line where the ghost says that Crystal was an American passed right by me as I thought she was English the whole episode. I had to go back to check on that.

I also just watched the first episode and really liked it (which usually means it'll be one-and-done for the series, but fingers crossed 🤞). I have no knowledge of these characters, but they seemed like a fun group that is well cast. Kind of gives off a Supernatural vibe, with the two young guys investigating supernatural cases, and even features Ruth Connell (the witch Rowena from Supernatural). I wondered if she would play the witch here, but I see she's someone called the Night Nurse.

hence this series (which has no connection to Doom Patrol)
Except for Ruth Connell, who reportedly played the same role in Doom Patrol (which I haven't seen). But, yes, that's likely the only connection, from what I've read.

That also worked well for Grimm and the aforementioned Supernatural.

Yes, different version of the same character. Kirby Howell-Baptiste and Donna Preston also reprise their roles as Death and Despair, respectively, from "Sandman".

That's not quite the same, though. Dead Boy Detectives is said to be canonically connected to The Sandman. It's not canonically connected to Doom Patrol, though.

Watched two more episodes of this last night. Still a fun show, though having seemingly every male character in this universe (Cat King, Monty) attracted to Edwin is becoming a bit tiresome (and a bit unbelievable as Charles is the more handsome and personable half of the duo).

Loved watching the Night Nurse get stymied by the Notary and non-specific paperwork.

Finished this over the weekend and really enjoyed it. Hoping for a second season but not holding my breath as most of these streaming shows I enjoy the most seem to get cancelled after one season. It would be hilarious watching the Night Nurse try and "mentor" and "supervise" the boys.

Have now started watching The Sandman (which I see has a second season in the works) and The Midnight Club (which I see is already cancelled, of course).

I just watched the season finale. It was a great season and everything came together quite nicely. I am not sure at all just where Niko is in that scene at the end. If there is a season 2, I guess we'll find out. I think that a second season is not unlikely. Looking quickly, I see that the executive producers are thinking about a season 2, but there is no word yet about it.

Netflix does have an article with more info about the ending.

Unfortunately, Netflix has cancelled it.
Dead Boy Detective spent only three weeks in Netflix’s Top 10 for English-language series, peaking at #2 in Week 1 behind phenom Baby Reindeer. ... Variety was first to report the cancellation.

Unfortunately, that wasn't good enough.

Not surprising. I broke my rule of not watching any streaming series until at least two seasons are completed, and enjoyed it, so of course it was cancelled.
