Apparently James Ellroy saw the 3 hr rough/director’s cut and loved it, before it was mutilated down to two hours…i’m surprised Scream/Kino etc haven’t licenced it, any one know if the files/workprint still exists?

De Palma is such a masterful filmmaker that I would savor any longer cut of any of his films.

Was this really a final "Director's Cut" or indeed a rough cut that DePalma had compiled and was editing down to a releasable length? Did it even have a score and final sound editing, dubbing, etc.? There are lots of instances where folks have seen much much longer versions of films that are in an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink version that directors have shown to friends and collaborators with no intention of that version ever being a final version. I honestly don't know the history of "Black Dahlia" but I would be surprised if DePalma was expecting a 3-hour version to be released. It is sometimes interesting to know about those versions, even if they are radically different from release versions. Decisions made for the final editing can be improvements or detriments. For example, I'd love to see Donald Cammell's version of "Performance" that was mentioned by his wife in an interview as being in her possession and as being radically different from the Roeg cut. But that'll never happen!

I really like MISSION TO MARS. But you can't go by me, I hate almost every film that takes place in outer space.
