Michael Mann appeared in a short clip on Fox News tonight and was asked about the "internet rumor" that De Niro and Pacino were filmed separately in the coffee shop scene in HEAT. Mann emphatically stated that "both actors WERE filmed together on the same set and in the same scene. There was no reason for them not to be together during the filming of HEAT and to think otherwise would be ridiculous."

I missed the Mann interview. Thanks for sharing the info, Brad.

Not once in my many screenings of this film did I ever think that they weren't on the same set.

Was he hooked to a polygraph? Did he receive a dose of sodium pentathol?
If they were both present than I would tell Mann that he should have directed the scene better! [IMG]
I was wrong once before in 1978 so it is conceivable that I was wrong this time too....

Hi Mike! I knew you'd be by! It's like you have superman-style hearing when it comes to this topic.
And 1978 was 23 years ago, so maybe you're due for another error. [IMG]

That scene was filmed at the Kate Mantilini restaurant on Wilshire in Beverly Hills, just down the street from where I now live. Inside, above the entrance they have a still photo taking during the filming there of Pacino and DeNiro sitting at the table and you can _clearly_ see both of them. Additionally they have some smaller pics of Pacino, DeNiro and Mann posing with the chef and some of the staff during filming. Case closed.

Or MAYBE Mike is also wrong about being not being wrong for 23 years. Maybe he is wrong all the time and doesn't even know it.

Mike, I thought you would go with the "CGI Mike Mann" theory. [IMG]

michael...i think there was something going on with deniro and pacino that they didnt want to be on the same set...the scene in the restaruant looked phony...look closely...you will see that deniro looks like hes in front of a fx screen

I've looked closely, Anthony, and I don't see it. I've also looked closely at the scene where Pacino pulls DeNiro over on the freeway, and they're clearly in the same shot.

Now, if you look closely at this topic, you'll see an internet urban legend that refuses to die, even when the director says it's nonsense.

As I said above, a conspiracy theorist can't be proven wrong. Anyone who disproves the theory must, by definition, be part of the conspiracy.

Well I hate to get into the middle of this long drawn out fight which I have observed many times over, but I'm going to jump in and throw this out there anyway. This is a promo shot found on http://movieweb.com/movie/heat/index.html
(Bigger image can be found here).
It seems as though we might have some photographic proof that both actors were indeed filmed together. [IMG]
