DD LFE boosted 10db in receivers, what about DTS?

In reading up on subwoofers, I discovered that receivers boost LFE 10db, which is why Avia tones are -10db to compensate, and why DVE (without the -10 compensation) gives wrong results.

So I was wondering about DTS. If I calibrate to 0db sub setting on my receiver for DD using Avia, does that mean I need to put the DTS sub setting at -10 to be the "same"?

Should be the same for DTS.

Next question: Why do AVRs boost the LFE 10Dbs?

The recordings are that way, so receivers are designed to compensate for this by default. Why it is that way, I couldn't tell you. I know I read a reason why, but I can't seem to remember it, probably because it really isn't all that important due to the fact that the compensation is already present and the typical consumer would not know the difference.

The one place it can come into play glaringly is with hi-res audio via analog - the +10dB is not present because the signal is passed via analog and does not pass through the receiver's bass management circuitry, so the appearance is that bass is lacking.

Has something to do with having more gain available on the DVD LFE track, or something... [IMG]
