DCT-100, RCA, and firmware (1 Viewer)

If you are in need of the latest firmware for the RCA DCT-100 and don't
have a satelllite connection, don't look to RCA to help you. They could
care less. I live in an apartment, and can't install a satellite dish.
Purchased a DCT-100 to get HD for my Toshiba set. The November firmware
has timing settings that improves picture/reception. Called RCA, and asked
for their help. They showed a total unwillingness to help me. Said I might
try the dealer I purchased it from. My dealer (Best Buy) stated they didn't
have the card to upgrade it, so couldn't help me. Called back RCA.
They have some registered dealers in my area, but didn't think they
could help me. I called a couple - they were unwilling to put
the firmware on my settop box.
If this is an indication of the willingness of RCA to help the
purchasers of its producats, let it be a lesson to you all. They are
unwilling to lift a finger to help a consumer with the smallest of tasks -
installing a simple firmware on their newly purchased set-top box.
God forbid I should have had a bigger problem.

The DTC-100 cannot enable firmware upgrade by "card." Upgrades are only available via satellite. What many are doing is finding someone in their locality with a DBS dish for DirecTV and just hooking up the DTC-100. One night should do it.

Yep, if you were closer to Boston, I'd volunteer. The RCA box can't be a high-profit high-service item for them, so thank goodness there's an easy solution. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

How often does the firmware get downloaded from the satellite? Also, do you have to have an activated account? Can't you still receive DirecTV's promo channels without an active account, but with the dish hooked up and aimed correctly?
