I have a non-anamorphic, DD 2.0 version of this film. Does another DVD exist, or is this the only available version?

If you mean Terrence Malick's Day's of Heaven, in Region One the only version available is from Paramount and it IS 16x9 enhanced and DD 5.1 surround. Catalog # 089427. Where did your copy come from?

Hmmmm. I don't know where it came from, but I'll take a look at it later today. I received it as a gift a couple of years ago, and have only watched it once (what a great film, but that's another story). It was, as I recall, not anamorphically-enhanced and I recall a 2.0 soundtrack.

Now I'm intrigued. I will double-check all of this. If there is a version as you describe, I'd like to get it.

Checked Amazon.com and thedigitalbits.com and, of course, you're absolutely right in that the only listed version is the one you describe. I wonder if, on that particular day, I simply didn't have everything configured properly. Or maybe I was drinking. Or both.

Aah, having nothing configured properly and drinking; those were truly days of heaven...

The Paramount DVD does have both a 5.1 and 2.0 track - perhaps you selected the 2.0 (or your DVD player did) by mistake? It definitely is anamorphic, though.

And it's a darn good-looking transfer at that.

You were all correct, of course. A couple of glasses of port and a careless flick of the remote to deactivate something and I probably 'selected' the 2.0 soundtrack. And the image is stunning; one of the finest examples of cinematography I can think of, and well-transferred to DVD..
