I have quick question for anyone who has the superbit edition of Das Boot. In the old Columbia version the subtitles were horribly done, and (for me anyway) ruined the pace of the film. Some of the lines were altered from the VHS version to shorten them too.

Does anyone know if the new Superbit version suffers from this problem?

I can answer the second question:

It has DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks in German and a Dolby Digital 2.0 track for the English dub.

A SUPERBIT TITLE HAS AN ENGLISH DUB!?!?!??!!

I thought one of the biggies of SuperBit was that it was always in the original language.... Hmm.... Guess that's out the window. [IMG]

The movie was filmed silent as the sub made too much noise to be useful for traditional sound recording, then the actors dubbed their dialog in German and English. You could make an arguement that neither is more original than the other.

Does anyone own this title know anything about the subtitles though? On the old version I remember them being so slow to update that you often read someones REPLY to a question (for example) before they had even spoke their line. It really disrupted the flow of the movie for me.

Another thing was the way they changed the jokes. I specifically remember the line the guy says about keeping the food in the "head" being different from the VHS subtitles.

    Hmmmm. [IMG]

I watched the "Superbit" version last night. The subtitles seemed to keep up with the dialogue fine.

I do have one question, though. When the sub is being attacked during the crew's attempt to sneak through the Straits of Gibralter, the captain commands via the subtitles "Prepare to abandon ship" as the sub begins to dive. It's been awhile since I've watched this film, but is this the correct translation? It seems like an inappropriate statement to make, considering the sub is diving to avoid attack.

Still wish they would have included the commentary instead of the dub.... [IMG]

The problem is that you miss a lot of the jokes if you listen to the English dub. Such as when the crew breaks out into singing "Tiparary" in English, or when the other captain in the bordello's bathroom says in English "I am not in the condition to F%#&!". This jarring change from German to English is missed in the English dub.
