I've read plenty of reviews where the reviewers use "Dark City" as a test for black level and shadow detail because it's so dark, but they never seem to say if the movie is actually worth watching. So, should I pick it up?

"Dark City" is a terrific film. It was Ebert's pick as the best movie of the year & he contributes a very interesting commentary track to the DVD.

To me, the film played out like a great 'Twilight Zone' episode, with an unpredictable ending. Great visuals, dark & edgy, with hints of 'Blade Runner', 'The Matrix' & other sci-fi films.

I love the movie and would recommend the DVD as a blind purchase to anyone who enjoys science fiction.

This movie is a work of art and likely the best sci-fi film since Blade Runner. There are amazing visuals in it you're not apt to find in another film. Just sublime.

If you like good science fiction, you won't be disappointed with Dark City.

Thanks for the responses! I guess I'm going to have to add this one to the list. One thing I noticed while out on DVD Empire...the DVD isn't anamorphic. Is that a misprint?

Hmmm. I'm pretty sure it is anamorphic. I haven't seen it in a while, but I seem to remember that New Line was doing anamorphic when a lot of other companies were not.

DARK CITY was my first DVD. Fantastic film. Very stylish and cool.

It is anamorphic and sports a very fine picture. Good movie too.

Go for it. Richard O'Brien as the villain, Jennifer Connelly as the leading lady...
Plus everything mentioned in the above posts...

One of the coolest Sci Fi movies in a decade I would say. Great script and acting, and an amazing visual style. The Blade Runner references are there, but since this came a full year before the Matrix, I never compare them.

This was Roger Eberts number one film of 98, over Saving Private Ryan and Shakespeare in Love

I remember watching this film no too recently, and thinking how oddly similar it was to the Matrix. Hmmm?

    ...

Anyways, it's a GREAT film. I loved it.

Man can we have a Dark City discussion without Matrix popping in...yes they have similarities...but not that much...and Matrix was in pre-production in 1997...the script had already been finished...

    Love this movie as well!

Try watching it with the volume off during the opening dialogue (which is how Proyas wanted it before studio intervention made him put in the Kiefer Sutherland intro speech). It plays much more like a film noir "try-n-figure-this-out" movie. I much prefer it that way and show it to my friends who've never seen it without the opening dialogue.
