Just watched "Dark Blue World" last night. A 2001 Czech film about WWII. It has the most amazing dog fight scenes. Easily outdoes any Hollywood attempt for sheer realism. It also has some amazing LFE when the airfield is under attack. Check it out........

I'd love to watch it, but I can't find it anywhere in my area. Blockbuster has it on VHS but not DVD! What a bunch of lamers. Like J6P is going to want to watch a Czech film in its original language with english subtitles. That would require reading on their part :)

I just rented this at Hollywood Video. Only 1 copy in the store though.
I had been wanting to see it. I haven't had the chance to put it in, but your comments will make me put it on the big screen rather than the smaller setup. :emoji_thumbsup:

I watched this film a couple of days ago. The dogfight scenes were nicely done.....there just wasn't enough of them and they were too short. Considering the story concerns two Czech pilots in the RAF it would have been a much better film if they had concentrated more on the RAF side of the story and less on the standard "potboiler" romantic triangle plot thread that a lot of these WWII movies seem to suffer from. The movie was slow paced considering the period it was set in but was still good overall. It is interesting to see things from a perspective other than an American one.

Some of the CGI effects looked a little 2D, especially an overhead shot of Spitfires escorting a bomber group.

Dark Blue World premiered at the AFI Festival last year and was a top favorite.

I bought it the day it came out on DVD. It is a must see film.

Yeah, they only had one copy at my local BB but I've seen it on the Netflix site if you can't get it in a store. Look for the tracer bullets during the dogfights. Absolutely amazing.......

I haven't gotten around to watching the movie yet (hopefully tonight!). I did, however, check out the trailers and I really enjoyed the one for Black Hawk Down. It looked to be Anamorphic and in 5.1. Quite impressive!
Too bad it was left off the BHD disc...

My local Hollywood Video had a copy for rent. At a buck a rental, I figured it was worth a look.

So what did I think?

Good movie, but not great - I like my war movies sans trite romances. Still, I'm glad I saw this as I wasn't aware of what those Czech pilots went through after the war. What a shame...
