Well, I figured I'd give this game a chance. If you have read any of my other posts you should know I'm not a big fan of MMORPG's but I'm trying to find one to get into nonetheless (I'll give everything a chance.) Well, I'm happy to report, I think I found a game I dont mind paying per month to play. Ive played a test character on one of the servers till about level 3 so far. I'm quite impressed.
The graphics are solid. Not anything spectacularly beyond belief but believe me they wont hurt your eyes :). The game runs pretty smoth on my system. I have a decently high end system (specs below) and I get a little slowdown only when Im in a crowded town with a fair amount of buildings. The Weather effects are very nice! There is a nice sense of immersion when it starts raining. I personally think Anarchy Online is a better looking game all together but I think we all know what a mess that game still is.
Soundwise the music is very nice. Good Celtic score with some nice themes throughout. All the sound effect are realistic and I've got nothing to complain about in the sound department.
The game plays very much like your typical MMORPG. The interface is very clean and you can move the interface bars into whatever order you would like them. The controls are responsive and it isn't to difficult to jump right into the game.
Lag is almost non-existant for me. I saw some instances of it but all in all no connection issues here.
Now for the REALLY good stuff. The questing system is great! If you liked Baldurs Gate 2 and loved the amount of quests you received you will like this game allot. I wasnt in the game fo reven an hour and I got at least 4 quests to do. Great stuff here!! Unlike AO's missions that were really dull and very repetitve these quests are very interesting and more akin to quests you'd find in a CRPG.
The best thing about the game is the 2 Role Playing servers. These servers are specifically set-up to allow players to Role Play there character. you are not allowed to talk about real life stuff, no talking about about baseball, your buddy at home. You have to roleplay and speak in the a way concurrent with the time period. I personally love this since I think the major problem with the majority of MMORPG is that players dont Role Play and just get to kill monsters for awhile and talk to there buddies for awhile. The community is very nice. Most are eager to help and will gladly help you get started. I had 2 mages give me a set of leather armor and a cloak in about a half hour of being in the game!
Installation was a breeze. The game only take up about 500mb of hard drive space. The patch updater program worked like a charm and I was creating my character and in the gamein less than 10 minutes!!
So far it looks like this game is everything that Anarchy Online wasnt. It launced great. its very fun and I personally am enjoying it quite a bit. I'm gonnastart my maincharacter tonight on the role play server. I will post my character name. If anyonewants to get together and play please shoot me an email. We have to get a Home Theater Guild started

Thanks for the review, I want to play this but am a little reserved about getting onto this type of game again :) I was so hopelessly addicted to EQ that I don't think I would stand a chance resisting the pull of this game.

I picked this up today after a friend of mine told me that he got it. I've only had a chance to get online for about an hour but so far it looks pretty good. I picked up my copy at Best Buy for $29.99. For that price it's definitely worth a try. I hope to get a lot more time in tomorrow.

Romier, I agree with everything you said. This is the game launch that all future MMORPG launches will be measure against. And it's fun as hell! :)
Questions: What server are you playing on? Midgard, Hibernia, or Albion? Race?
I'm a Lurikeen Eldritch on the Percival server, currently based out of Howth.

I like it quite a bit. Was really burned out on EQ.
I am on Galahd in Midgard. If anyone else is out there drop me an email or send Oryx a tell.
We have an established guild with mostly old EQ players but have added some new friends as well.

Romier,
Well, looks like our characters will have to be foes on Percival. Qarien is level 5, but we may have to start new characters on the other RP server (Guinevere) if we want to play together...
Unless something has changed, you can only play one race on most of the servers...

You guys have really peaked my interest here...I may have to have a look at picking this one up. Any ideas on how it would run on my system? Does it need mega horsepower to play half decently?

Stacy, your gonna need a better vid card. I would recommend a Geforce 2 MX if you dont wanna spend too much money. You can get a 64mb Geforce 2xm for around 100-150 bucks.
I would also recommend upgrading to 256mb of ram. It will help you run the game allot smoother as the game is a bit of a memory hog. Ram is so cheap anymore you can get a good 128 or hell even a 256 chip for around 30 bucks.
If you upgrade those two things you should be able to run the game without a problem.
Also, has anyone else been getting dropped regularly since Tuesdays patch? I have had the game for about a week and a half and I never have been dropped. They did the patch on Tuesday and last night I got dropped like 3 times in about 5 hours of play. Its not really that bad I mean its only three times and for a game that launched last week its pretty damn stable.
When it drops it gives a message that says "a serious error has occured" and continues on to say I have been dropped from the server. When I close out of the game my internet connection is fine. I can get pages and email and my pings are at around 20-30ms. Just curious if anyone else is experiencing this?

I was playing last night for about 3 hours and didn't get dropped once. I've only gotten dropped once since I started playing. The only problem that I've had with the game is graphical glitches and I'm pretty sure that problem lies with my video drivers. I have an ATI Radeon DDR and I upgraded to the latest drivers yesterday. That seems to have fixed the problem.
I got into a group of 6 last night and we were picking off purple guys one after the other! Man that was fun! I gained 2 levels of experience.

I'm happy to report that whatever the problem was it seems to have been cleared up. I played for about 4 hours last night and I didnt get dropped at all.
Got my Paladin up to level 7 last night. I've been mostly soloing. I've grouped up a couple of times but I just wanted to really get to know the interface and the nuancs of the game before I got into some good grouping sessions.
If you guys havent read this yet I would suggest doing so cause allot of this stuff is really exciting!! It is an open letter from the main man at Mythic:
An Open Letter - What comes next for DAoC?
Folks,
First, I want to thank all of you who have bought and are playing our game. You are part of the most successful launch in MMORPG history. The copies have flown off the shelves, our servers are stable and we are running 24x7 except for patching and a couple of hours on day one. For those of you who can’t get a copy, I have good news for you as well which I will address below. No matter whether you are a player or, we hope, soon to be a player, things are just going to get better and better. The point of this letter is to let the community know just how much better they are going to get in the next few months. As I’ve said before, it is our goal to make DAoC the premier MMORPG in the industry. When competing against the excellent other games in our industry you do not get there by resting on your laurels or by losing focus. We will do nether and here are a few things that we will be in place in DAoC before the end of the year.
1) Working with our friends at VU, an additional 75K copies of the game have been shipped. This should help take care of some of the demand for DAoC. More copies will be manufactured after that so the shortage of DAoC on the shelves will soon end. We have already arranged for enough servers and bandwidth to handle the additional demand.
2) We will make major changes to the various interfaces that are part of DAoC. In the most general of terms, we will be adding improvements to chat, appeal, quest journal and advice. We will also be adding an auction channel and a compass to the game.
3) We will be adding at least two more sever types. While I won’t go into details in this letter, these are types that the player community has been asking us for and I think will bring a smile to many faces.
4) We will be taking care of some issues such as grouping across zones, lag in the big cities and some networking issues such as when you go link-dead in the game. We are also further reducing the amount of bandwidth the game consumes.
5) We will be adding a fuller implementation of horses and transportation modes in the game.
6) We will be adding a housing system (in stages) to the game.
7) We will make improvements to things such as the water, lava and snow events in the game.
8) We will add commands such as tracking, climbing, etc.
9) We will be adding shapeshifting to the game.
10) We will be adding more intricacies to the PvP system within the game. Look for things such as slopes and fatigue, falling damage, alliances and more.
11) We will be adding ladders to the game.
12) We will be adding a lot of new content to the game including new spells and spell lines, quests and fighting areas.
This is just some of the things we have planned to add over the next three months. It is not an exhaustive list and it does not reflect the usual bug fixes, tweaking, etc. of the classes. Do not get upset if you don’t see something that you expected or wanted, this is just a list of some of the things we are doing. So please, no new topics such as "I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT MYTHIC IS WORKING ON LAVA WHEN THEY SHOULD BE FIXING XXX." This is only a partial list and as our beta testers can tell you, we are quite capable of multi-tasking around here. There is a lot more coming...
Mark
Also the new patch is out today!! It adds a compass (FINALLY!) and a network gauge so you can see the packet loss, your FPS and more...Mythic is really impressing the hell out of me with their customer support.

Hey, I am really jazzed about this game. I played EQ on a regular basis over a year ago but lost interest after a couple of months. This game basically takes EQ and polishes it up bigtime. I can't believe that the game launched a week ago and it is already very playable and FUN. BTW, it's on sale at Best Buy this week for 30 bucks.
