in our family room the tv is in a corner, above the fireplace. i want to put the left and right on the side walls of the room. Can I put my center channel a couple of feet to the left of the tv? How bad will it sound?

It will sound like crap. The point of the center is to anchor the dialogue to the tv. If it's 2 feet to the left of the tv, all the dialogue will appear to be 2 feet to the left of the tv. Place it there at your own peril.
