I have a question about a particular setup and what receiver would be good.

I have a small squarish room, and I want my receiver to do two things:

1. Play 5.1 surround sound
2. Play dual stereo ceiling speakers in all four corners of the room

I am considering the following setup (7.1 receiver):
passive soundbar for right, center and left
four in ceiling speakers for center and rear right and left

My question is, would it be possible to only play music through the center and rear surrounds, and turn off the soundbar when playing music?

I'm a little confused by "four in ceiling speakers for center and rear right and left". The center is in the soundbar. Did you just mean the four ceiling speakers mounted in the corners?

The best way to do what I think you want is to use a 5.1 speaker set (soundbar for front left, center and front right and two additional speakers for the surrounds) and then get four 4 ohm in-ceiling speakers (wired in series to produce an 8 ohm load) connected to Zone 2 for the music.

The 5.1 surround sound would have it's own set of speakers and the music system would have it's own set.

Hopefully some others will have better options for you.
