I have two openings in my home theater room where I'd like to put something over so I can restrict sound from traveling outside the room. On the Internet, I've found something called accoustic curtains that supposedly do the job. Does anyone know if these really work? It's okay if it doesn't totally block the sound; around a 50% reduction would be good to me.

Thank you.

I don't know about "acoustic curtains". I do know that as a rule, unless the curtains have a lead lining in them (a la real theatres)there is little if any acoustic properties to help with sound. The true "theatre" lead based curtains are quite heavy and expensive, and therefore, not condusive to a home based application.

Hope this helps.

Regular (i.e., non-lead curtains) may attentuate some of the higher frequencies, but I doubt that they'll do much to contain most of the sound.

I’m not finished installing my system yet, so I can’t properly test my acoustic curtains ‘low’ levels performance, but I can tell you they are certainly cutting down street noise of all kinds to a minimum, from inside the room I was screaming at someone tapping on the window and he never heard me, and I can’t hardly hear the neighbors kids playing next to my window, I’m using acoustic curtains used in recording studios , the back lining is a heavy canvas type material that wont allow any air to flow through it, I took a chance and ordered used ones from the link below and they are like new.

Acoustical Surfaces sells curtains that are backed with mass loaded vinly. They are heavy and will block sound. That don't look that great though.

Kevin, where can I find those vinyl curtains? I don't really care about the look because I'll only be using the curtains during a movie. Do you have any idea how heavy they are?

Any other solutions? As I said before, I want something non-permanant that I could easily put up and take down.

Kevin, you're referring to the quilted curtain S.T.O.P., right?

What if I were to get the mass loaded vinyl and use that alone as a sound barrier? How good will that work?
