Winner - Grand Jury Prize, Cannes Film Festival
Debuting October 7 on DVD and Videocassette
    * * * *
    * * * * Culver City, CA (August 6, 2003) - Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at this
year's Academy Awards®, internationally renowned filmmaker and auteur Aki Kaurismäki *
(Leningrad Cowboys Go America, Hamlet Goes Business) brings us THE MAN WITHOUT A
PAST, the touching comedic fable and amusing second installment of his remarkable "Finland
Trilogy," premiering on DVD and VHS October 7 from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment. *

    * * * * Revered at several prestigious film festivals worldwide with Grand Jury Prize honors at
the Cannes Film Festival. *Sony Pictures Classics THE MAN WITHOUT A PAST was praised by
critics and movie-fans alike as "hilarious and humane" (The New York Times), "completely
winning" (Premiere Magazine), "lyrical and engaging" (The Village Voice) and "magnificently
simple" (New York Magazine). *With an equal balance of dignity, humor and a bit of
melancholy typical of the classic films of Charlie Chaplin, Kaurismäki's THE MAN WITHOUT
A PAST is an intriguing and "artful romantic comedy with a twist of rueful wisdom and a
welcome blast of vintage rock" (Rolling Stone).

    * * * * When a laborer (comically played with deadpan panache by Markku Peltola) arrives in
Helsinki in search of a job, he gets a brutal surprise beating in a local park by a group of thugs
instead. *He miraculously survives, but amnesia prevents him from remembering anything,
including his name. *On his travels to rebuild his life, he encounters a whole set of quirky
townspeople including a helpful and lovely Salvation Army worker (2002 Cannes Film Festival
Best Actress Award winner Kati Outinen) who develops a shy interest in him as a sweet, natural
romance begins between the two. *But just as the man's life begins to make sense again, his past
    suddenly returns to haunt him.

The first Aki Kaurismäki DVD in Region 1 . . . Hallelujah!! Now if we could just get Drifting Clouds, Ariel, and The Match Factory Girl.

    Great stuff. Must-buy.
