    EARTH VS.
    THE FLYING SAUCERS
    ====================
With Special Effects by the Legendary
Ray Harryhausen, Flies to DVD on Sept. 17
    __________________________________________________ ___________________
    Culver City, Calif. (July 8, 2002) - Special-effects master
Ray Harryhausen brings to life an unforgettable battle between
Earthlings and horrible, terrible creatures from outer space in 1956's
EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS, which comes to DVD for the first time on
Sept. 17 from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment.
Named by www.bmonster.com as one of the 10 best "alien
invader" movies ever made, EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS is a classic
blend of Cold War paranoia, science-fiction speculation and
    Saturday-matinee adventure. "Leonard Maltin's 2002 Movie & Video Guide"
calls it "a winner that belies its B origins nearly every step of the
    way."
The alien assault begins in peace as zombie-like creatures
from outser space arrive at a U.S. Army base in search of help for their
dying planet. They try to make friendly contact with Dr. Russ Marvin
(Hugh Marlowe of "Elmer Gantry") and his wife, Carol (Joan Taylor of "20
Million Miles to Earth"). But their peaceful efforts are shattered when
the military greets their fleet of flying saucers with gunfire. The
aliens are forced to retaliate, setting up a deadly game of
beat-the-clock, as Dr. Marvin tries to invent a weapon to save the
    entire human race.
EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS: A Columbia Pictures
Presentation. Also starring Donald Curtis, Morris Ankrum, Paul Frees.
Executive Producer Sam Katzman. Produced by Charles H. Schneer.
Screenplay by George Worthington Yates and Raymond T. Marcus; screen
story by Curt Siodmak. Special Effects Created by Ray Harryhausen.
    Directed by Fred F. Sears.

It will be nice to see this film in a widescreen presentation especially with some extras. My LD version is fullscreen. Thanks Columbia! Now if we can just get "The Beast from 20000 Fathoms". [IMG] [IMG]

Looking forward to this one too-good to see 16x9 and a new making-of included. But as I've said before, I'm confused as to why Columbia keeps including the same Harryhausen Chronicles and Dynamation featurettes on every single disc. The series is very well done overall, but it's a shame there aren't a few more unique extras on each disc. This one could have easily slipped to the MAR dark side, though, so I'll happily take what we're getting here.

Another 50's SF favorite of mine, the saucers destroying Washington DC at the finale predates Independence Day by 40 years, and the saucers zapping the Washington Monument was spoofed by Tim Burton in Mars Attacks, looking forward to this classic on DVD.[IMG]

I have this one on LD. I always assumed that the 'full frame' presentation was the OAR. It certainly looks properly framed. I'd also assume that the DVD will not be TOO extreme in it's framing, probably 1.66:1 or 1.85:1. I'm looking forward to picking it up. I remember seeing this as a youngster and being genuinely 'creeped out' by it. Watching it again recently (on LD) I was JUST as creeped out. -Mike

Excellent! More Harryhausen is always a good thing. Now where the heck is "Mysterious Island"? Does anyone think that there's a chance of Region 1 getting the Harryhausen boxset that is currently available in Japan?
