I have heard that Wal-Mart stores are carrying exclusive CTHE DVD's that contain only the fullscreen side of a DVD that was previously available as a fullscreen/widescreen flipper disc. Apparantly Wal-Mart is loading up their bargain bins with these stripped down DVD's. I'd like to get a complete list of these DVD's, so people know which ones to avoid when looking through their bargain bins. If you have run into any such titles, please make a note here. Only include titles that were at one point available in OAR. Some of the titles that have already been confirmed are:

    About Last Night
    The Bear
    Bite The Bullet
    Blue Thunder
    Buddy Holly Story
    Chances Are
    Cruel Intentions 2
    Dance With Me
    The Deep
    Excess Baggage
    The Eye of the Beholder
    The Fan
    Frankenstein
    Hero
    Hush
    Idle Hands
    Jawbreaker
    Josie and the Pussycats
    Last Action Hero
    The Mirror Has Two Faces
    The Missing
    Moscow on the Hudson
    Peggy Sue Got Married
    The Principal
    Sheena
    Suspect
    The Toy
    Wild Things

I was this close to picking up Frankenstein before I saw the "fullscreen" in tiny print at the back. Thanks!

This has been brought up many times. The sad thing is that it is not just a Wal*Mart exclusive thing. CTHE is dropping the WS side from many of their dual sided, dual format discs period. Any retailer will eventually have FS only versions of many titles for the great privledge of having a couple of bucks knocked off. Problem is, these titles are worth absolutely nothing now.

Still, it's wrong. Maybe sooner or later it will be a title you do care about.

I bought Hush from deepdiscountdvd.com and was horrified to see it's full-screen. I have a crappy VHS rental copy, I don't need another...

I'm sending it back. It's not worth the four ninety I paid...

"...About Last Night" is fool-screen only as well.

    Sincerely,

    John Kilduff...

That's all I've got so far.

I think MGM is doing this with a few of their titles as well. I saw a cheapo, single-disc FF only Dances With Wolves at Circuit City a few weeks ago.[IMG]

    "Wild Things" is another one.

The difference is, with MGM, they are not discontinuing the Widescreen special edition as well. As CTHE is doing.

    ADD

    SHEENA

THE PRINCIPAL (found in Canada, not in U.S. so far)

Early copies of many of those titles in the first post were WS in the bin, which is why you need to check there on a fairly regular basis before the FS versions become the norm. In fact, THE PRINCIPAL is the first one I've ever bought in the bin assuming it to be WS (since many Canadian bin titles still are) but now I'm gonna have to keep a sharper eye out. Didn't actually buy SHEENA; just happened to notice it was FS.

I haven't seen a film on any of these CTHE 'soon to be full-screen only' lists that I give a damn about, but I agree the trend is disconcerting.

In regards to the above quote, I would guess this is being done on purpose, as CTHE continues pushing DVD to the masses, while setting up us film enthusiasts for Blu-Ray.

I'm really loathing CTHE at the moment. It seems everything they're doing now-a-days is lowest common denominator-type stuff, ignoring their catalog releases and squeezing every last cent out of what they consider to be what the masses want on DVD, all the while treating DVD as a second-class citizen to make way for blue-ray.

This is all just my personal opinion and impressions on what is happening at the moment, but I fear it'll be a dark day for movie fans if CTHE buys MGM.

    I agree

It's too bad that it seems like this is the way it is going to go.

What the hell is their reasoning for doing this??? If it is to get people to buy Blu-Ray or whatever it's called, it doesn't matter because this has me so angry that I won't buy any more Sony electronics products!
