Premiering September 14 on DVD and VHS

Culver City, CA (July 12, 2004) - From Sony Pictures Classics comes this moody,
sensual crime thriller inspired by the classic film noirs of the 40s and 50s that takes place post-
WWII on the canals between Glasgow and Edinburgh, YOUNG ADAM was adapted from the
best-selling novel by Scottish beat writer Alexander Trocchi by award-winning short film
writer/director David Mackenzie (The Last Great Wilderness). *Featuring a strong cast headed by
Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge, Big Fish), Tilda Swinton (Adapation, The Deep End), Peter
Mullan (The Magdalene Sisters, The Claim) and Emily Mortimer (Lovely & Amazing, Formula
51), the film was an Official Selection at the New York, Toronto and Cannes Film Festivals and
won British Newcomer of the Year honors for director Mackenzie from the London Critics
Circle Film Awards. *Featuring original music by acclaimed music artist David Byrne of Talking
Heads, YOUNG ADAM will be released September 14 on DVD and VHS (rental) from
    Columbia Tristar Home Entertainment.

    Synopsis:
The film focuses on the crisis of Joe (McGregor); a young drifter who finds work on a
barge owned by the down-to-earth Les (Mullan) and his enigmatic wife Ella (Swinton). *One
afternoon Joe and Les happen upon the corpse of a young woman floating in the water and the
questions begin. Accident? Suicide? Murder? *As the police investigate the case and a suspect is
arrested, it becomes evident that Joe knows more about the drowned woman Cathie (Mortimer)
than he will admit. *Meanwhile, against the backdrop of the investigation, an unspoken attraction
has developed between Joe and Ella, and claustrophic tensions evolve between the three of them
in the confined space of the barge.

Wasn't this rated NC-17 in theaters? It would be a shame if only a cut version was available on R1 DVD.

I do remember McGregor complaining about the US's ratings for violence vs sex being way out of wack on things like a film like this. Too bad, I thought Columbia Tri-Star wouldn't pull a Warner Bros (think "Eyes Wide Shut" and "Gia"), and give us the unrated version, which is the preferred verion of the creative team behind the film.

So Columbia Tristar will do unrated releases, but not NC-17s? I'll hold out in hopes this is given a proper release later.

I checked Blackstar UK and they have a version available. Its 98 minutes, which according to IMDB says is the French version shown at Cannes.

    Other versions are 93.

Looks like I going outside region 1 for this one.

This doesn't make any sense. If Columbia/TriStar can release the graphic unrated version of In The Cut to the US, what's the problem with this one?

That's the same stance I had about The Phantom Menace and Attack Of The Clones!
