    SHIP OF FOOLS
    ******************************
New to DVD on December 2

    * * * * Culver City, CA (September 22, 2003) - Based on the acclaimed novel by Katherine
Anne Porter (which became a national best-seller within days of its publication), SHIP OF
FOOLS (1965) stars Vivian Leigh in only her third American film, following her Oscar®-
winning roles in Gone with the Wind and A Streetcar Named Desire, plus an incredible ensemble
cast in this thought-provoking and powerful character-driven drama that won two Academy
Awards®, premiering on DVD December 2 from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment.

    * * * * Set in 1933 aboard a luxury ocean liner bound from Mexico to Germany during the Nazi
regime, the ship is a hot bed of disillusionment, prejudice and delusions of grandeur as it is
divided into two sections - in the high class are several well-to-do people, while below deck are a
horde of sugar field workers returning to Spain after a season of work in Cuba. * *Among the
many passengers are new divorcee Mary Treadwell (Leigh), desperate for love and lost youth. *
Also starring are Simone Signoret (Diabolique) as a Spanish Noblewoman being deported as a
political prisoner; Lee Marvin (The Dirty Dozen) as an aging, alcoholic ballplayer, and Jose
Ferrer (Cyrano de Bergerac) as a budding Nazi whose brutishness foreshadows the holocaust to
come. *Their separate but interlocking stories, beautifully observed by director Stanley Kramer
(Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?, The Defiant Ones) serve as a brilliant microcosm of a world
    on the verge of war.

I can't believe Columbia is releasing this full frame! I would have recommended this dvd to others, but not now. I won't buy it for myself which is a shame because it's an excellent film.

My guess is that, as is the case a lot of times, that the press release is incorrect. Columbia hasn't released any full-frame films from after 1960 (that I know of, at least), and even the ones like Anatomy of a Murder and Cowboy are the exception rather than the rule. I would not get too excited until the facts are known.

Columbia's press releases are often wrong:

In the case of this film, it was not Vivien Leigh's third American film, but her fourth. (They forgot about WATERLOO BRIDGE!)

Recently, Columbia's press release said THE JOLSON STORY would be mono, and the DVD is stereo.

So, don't trust Columbia's press releases. The DVD will likely (and hopefully) be OAR.

They'll have a sale here (maybe in the new year -- I've gotta start buying stuff for others soon! [IMG]) if it's 16x9 formatted OAR, but under no circumstances will they have a sale for a MAR presentation.

Columbia has done a beautiful job with most of their classic titles (included a few that I continue to consider absolutely reference for classic on disc, among them Only Angels Have Wings and His Girl Friday), so my hopes remain high (as they do for their upcoming Platinum Blonde [IMG] ).

Is "Ship Of Fools" a movie about the people who took over Columbia/Tristar Video? [IMG]
(Sorry, I know that was mean, but I couldn't resist!)

Conrad - are you sure that Jolson Story is stereo. None of the reviews mentioned it. I bypassed the disc and keptmy stereo laser. This would be great if true. - Can anyone else confirm this?

FWIW Turner Classic Movies showed Ship Of Fools today and that version is not letterboxed either.
