"A cheerful cross between a slice of life and a supernatural fable." *- Roger Ebert

    CROSSROADS
    ****************************
New to DVD on August 10

    * * * * Culver City, CA (June 14, 2004) – An inspirational and passionate film for blues music fans,
CROSSROADS is the musical drama loosely based on the mythic character of Faust and the American
fable involving real-life Mississippi blues music legend Robert Johnson, starring Ralph Macchio (The
Karate Kid, My Cousin Vinny), Jami Gertz (Jersey Girl, TVs "Still Standing") and Joe Seneca (A Time to
Kill, Mo Better Blues), debuting for the first time on DVD August 10 from Columbia TriStar Home
    Entertainment.

    Synopsis:
Young musical prodigy Eugene Martone (Macchio) is a classically trained guitarist studying at
New York's Julliard School who becomes obsessed with early blues music. * Intent on discovering the
whereabouts of Robert Johnson's unpublished 30th song recorded 50 years prior, Eugene seeks out the
legendary bluesman Willie Brown (Seneca) at a Harlem nursing home. *Willie promises to teach Eugene
the song if the young man helps him get back to a Mississippi crossroads, where he can win back his soul
from the Devil, which he sold in exchange for musical greatness many decades before. *Making their way
across the Mississippi Delta, the duo meets Frances (Gertz), a runaway who becomes a love interest for
Eugene. *In the end, the fate of Willie's soul will rely upon his young student to defeat the Devil's
henchman (heavy metal virtuoso Steve Vai) in a climactic guitar battle.

Based on a contest-winning script by former blues musician John Fusco (Young Guns, Hidalgo)
and featuring the acclaimed motion picture soundtrack written and performed by Ry Cooder (Buena Vista
Social Club), CROSSROADS is directed by Walter Hill (48 Hours, Streets of Fire).

One of my all time favorites----I'll be picking up this one.

The one scene where steve vai is riffing it out with ralph macchio is classic.

I also like the opening sequence where the great robert johnson sits down to record some blues and sets down a bottle of whisky at his feet.

Interesting tidbit of information...my father sold a car to Arlen Roth, the guitarist who taught Ralph Macchio how to play for this movie. [IMG]

I preordered Crossroads from Laser's Edge 11 days ago.

Off topic, but I also preordered two other favorites, Smile and I Wanna Hold Your Hand.

Finally, one of my all-time favorites comes to DVD! The duelling guitar scene at the end is incredible.

Now if only they would release "Joey" from 1986. I know it's a kind of lame movie, but it's a guilty pleasure of mine. I've already worn out my VHS [IMG] copy from HBO to the point that it is unwatchable.

Uninspired cover art notwithstanding, it's good to finally see this one come to DVD, especially after I almost started looking to eBay for a laserdisc.

A classic that inadvertantly pays tribute to blues legend Robert Johnson (and the "legend" of Johnson for that matter).

Is there no 5.1 track? I've been waiting on this for years. This movie begs for a surround track.
