Watching this movie, it is difficult to tell when the story is taking place: present day? 100 years ago? 500 years ago? Does anyone know the actual era in which it is set?

Early 19th century wasn't it? I thought I read that somewhere...

IIRC, Chow Yun-Fat's character had the shaved forehead and pigtail that is signature to the Manchurian Qing Dynasty, which was from 1644 to 1911. it is thus plausible that it was "set" in the 19th century, although I would imagine 18th or even 17th was more likely.

but since Lee says it was a "dream of China", who knows?

It seems to be prior to the arrival of European colonists, so that makes me lean toward the earlier dates.
