Darn it, the link to DVDCompare.org does not work, I would like to see a side by side comparison between the two transfers.

I saw that Amazon UK has another R2 gem for £7.99:
Sam Peckingpah's Cross of Iron!!
I already own it and it is 1.85:1 anamorphic with
pretty good picture and it is the uncut version.
It has a running time of 126m59s which is equivalent
of 132m17s when compensating for the 24/25 fps speedup.
If you are in R2 or can play all regions, get it now!
The R1 is Pan'n'Scan and only 128m!! Stay away!!

Time Bandits is back at GBP 16.99.....

BTW: European custumers could also order Cross Of Iron at Play.com there it is also GBP 7,99, but including shipment. :emoji_thumbsup:

Both R1 versions are hideously bad on any large-screen system. Loads of video noise...absolutely no fine image detail (looks like a VHS dub...no kidding!), tons of aliasing/shimmer and compression artifacting.

I don't care what "extras" might be on any R1 criterion release...with a transfer this bad the disc should be boycotted.

I'd love to know just how much better the R2 version is.

Hopefully one day Criterion (or someone) will revisit this title for R1 and do it right!!!

I just watched the UK R2 on a Sony VW10HT projected
about 100" wide and I had no complaints about the picture.
Not reference quality but I am happy with it.
Slightly soft looking picture but no
edge enhancement,shimmering/aliasing or compression
artifacts. The only artifacts might be from the film source
itself, like a slight telecine wobble but only minor and
not enough to be annoying or noticeable in the long run.

Oh, and the 2002 interview (27 minutes) with Terry Gilliam
and Michael Palin was very good and informative!
I have not listened to the commentary yet, except verifying
that the swearword was there... :)

Indeed. I just picked this up too, while it was still £7.99 - and I'm somewhat chuffed with it too.

Danny, thanks for pushing me over the edge into buying this. :)
