I have been thinking of picking up Time Bandits but
can't decide what release is best, Criterion or Anchor Bays
    R2 version.
How is the picture and sound on the Criterion?

On paper, the R2 wins big (5.1 mix, 16x9 enhanced,
loads of extras) but I have not seen any real comparisons
    or reviews.

    Time Bandits

    R0 SE (America) - Criterion

    Theatrical trailer
    1.85:1 non anamorphic NTSC
    English Dolby Digital 2.0 format
    Amaray Case

R2 (United Kingdom) - Anchor Bay

Audio commentary with director Terry Gilliam, actor and cowriter Michael Palin and actors John Cleese, David Warner and Craig Warnock
    Deleted scene
Interview with director Terry Gilliam and actor and cowriter Michael Palin
    Storyboard extracts
    Production photo gallery
    Dream facts
    "Time Bandits" scrapbook
    Theatrical trailer
    Production notes

Note - The initial release featured the Criterion commentary track that was not classified by the BBFC, and contained a swearword. This disc was quickly withdrawn and replaced by a disc with the swearing removed to get a lower rating.

    Amazon.co.uk, Benson's World, Blackstar.co.uk

OVERALL : R2 - The UK Region 2 release contains additional extra features

    Cuts

    R0 - No cuts
R2 - No cuts, but word substitution in audio commentary. Only a few discs were sold before it was withdrawn.

The R2/UK edition also has a nice (but ultimately worthless) "time travel map". The original 2.0 stereo mix is also available.

The removed swearword in the commentary is in the Robin Hood scene BTW, when John Cleese uses the word "fucking".

The UK version is for sale on Amazon.co.uk, you can pick it up for a reasonable GBP 7.99 (about USD 12,50) but I don't know about shipping costs to the USA....

EDIT: P.S.: Charles's info is from www.dvdcompare.org.uk, a pretty good dvd comparison site.

    EDIT2: Fixed the URL [IMG]

but what about the quality of picture/sound?
    Better or worse than Criterion?
I read that the Criterion had good sound but lousy
    transfer picture wise.
    £7.99 is a bargain...

I just got a link to a review of the R2,
    http://www.dvdanswers.com/index.php?r=2&s=2&c=584
and after that, I placed an order for it at amazon.co.uk.

Here are som quotes about the quality:
"The video is quite soft with a tolerable quantity of grain and artefacts. However, it is not atrocious and is presented in 1.85:1 with anamorphic enhancement. Luckily this region two disc from Anchor Bay is the best available due to it being anamorphic, where as previous releases including the Criterion are either non-anamorphic or (unbelievably) 4:3. "

"All versions of this film are now presented with a Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo soundtrack however, the region two also comes with a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix which is actually quite decent. Some fun use of the rear speakers during explosions or the like let you know that it is remixed for your entertainment. The only problem is that there seems to be lip syncing problems during the films second half. "

Too bad about the lip synching but that might just
be the reviewers dvd player. Anyway, I went for it.

just to let you know the 5.1 sountrack has lip sync probs during the titanic sequences.

also, i would try and get it from Amazon.co.uk.

why ? because there is a good chance you will get the first pressing with the swearing still intact- Collectors Item [IMG]

i got mine a month back, and so did a few other people, we all got the first pressing.

what was the word that was removed? and when?

I ordered today from amazon.co.uk and I should
    probably get it this week.

I just saw that they also had "The Italian Job" for £8.99 ($14.20)
and that seems to be nice disc too!

And "The Wickerman (Directors Cut, 2 disc)" for £7.99($12.60)!!

I just ordered the following from AmazonUK:

    Night On Earh
    Monty Pythons Meaning of Life
    Time Bandits

The total with shipping was $49.82 which is about the going rate for the region 1 Monty Python's Meaning of Life on ebay.

I have the Criterion Laserdisc version of Time Bandits but I really wanted an anamorphic 5.1 version of the film.

I have the Anchor Bay Time Bandits disc and I'm happy with it. I once asked some friends whether I should get the Criterion and they made it sound as if it wasn't that big a difference or deal. I guess the Criterion has the commentary, which I'm not interested in, and a few other nicknacks.

at 35:30 Cleese is mid way through his little explaination of Robin Hood as "the duke of Kent" (I ordered this 2 days ago from amazon UK) and sure enough The swearword is there!!!!!!!! YES!!! God I hate censorship. :-(

so if you have a copy , go to chapter 9 at 35:30 and listen from there to put it into context.

Amazon are selling this inc Post and packing for £9:45. This is unusually cheap so it would seem they are trying to get rid of the uncensored copies, SO BUY NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if you get thr criterion you get 2.0 widescreen and the f word.

if you get the anchor bay you get 2.0 , 5,1 with "alleged" lip sync and anamorphic and if you buy now, the f word. if the f word doesn't matter, the anchor bay is superior to criterion. withnail and i was superior also.

I don't suppose that there's a chance that this title might get revisited at any point. This is the one Gilliam film that I'm missing, but it seems like there's a reasonably lackluster set of extras, and a non-anamorphic transfer that I don't remember looking all that great when I rented it.

Its possible. Criterion said they were going to re-do some of their early non-anamorphic titles. That plus the fact that Terry Gilliam LOVES Criterion.

It should be noted that, on the R2 edition, the 2.0 soundtrack has no lip-sync issues whatsoever.
