I can't recall the last time I was so overwhelmed by a film as I was with Marcel Carné 's Children of Paradise. The Criterion DVD is amazing and the transfer unbelievably better than the Laser Disc I saw of it years ago... ( please remember it is still from 1945 ! )
I was absolutely blown away by this film on DVD... it comes out Tuesday, and I strongly suggest a purchase... I'm not that big on picture quality ( over film ), but it definitely helped this particular presentation...
I hurriedly wrote my graphic review ( good captures ) here:
I have cross-posted this to Movies as my review covers the film itself.
If Criterion had released this prior to Jan 1 then I would say an easy winner for DVD of the Year in my books...
Hve any of you seen this DVD yet ? and opinions ?

Sorry, I had meant to post this as well about the DVD:
About the transfer and restoration: Children of Paradise is presented in its original theatrical ratio of 133:1. This new transfer was created on a high definition Spirit Datacine from Pathé's restored 35mm fine grain master and restored digital audio master. Due to extensive damage to sections of the original negative, Pathé replaced some segments of the film using duplicate elements. As a result, some variation in grain textures remains. Criterion used the MTI Digital Restoration System to remove over 30,000 instances of dirt, debris, and scratches that remained in Pathé's restored film materials. Some flaws, including jump cuts, were beyond repair and are inherent in the film as it survives. Remaining clicks, pops, hiss, and crackle were removed from Pathé's restored soundtrack using the Cedar Audio Restoration system. I think it looks marvelous... and sounds very good as well.

    Thanks for posting this, guys.
I've been drooling over this release since I first heard it was "coming soon," which was over a year ago. Sounds like it's going to be worth the wait.
I saw this movie once theatrically. Unfortunatly, that print ran only about 170 minutes. In fact, I didn't even know the film was in two parts with an intermission, since this was also omitted from the print I saw.
It's absolutely thrilling to see this film get the decent presentation it deserves.

When I heard it was hitting mailboxes way early, I'd hoped mine would also come before the holiday weekend. Alas no... maybe because it's tied to my BELLE DE JOUR order?
And I didn't get STALKER today either, despite upping the shipping to 2-day UPS. [IMG]
Great review, Gary - those screengrabs are gorgeous!

Gary, thanks for the heads-up on this title. I enjoy reading the reviews on your site and this one is no different.
EDIT: er, I mean, I also enjoyed reading that review. Geez, I have the grammar of a toddler.

It must be my eyes or my monitor is screwed up, but those caps look more like the VistaVision ratio of 1.66:1. Like I said, must be my eyes.

I've never seen this film - mostly due to reports as to wildly varying print quality on the revival circuit - although I've always wanted to. Gary, your review will make me pick it up, sight-unseen, tomorrow.

I had the opportunity for seeing "Children of Paradise" in an actual, full size, movie theatre, on two occasions.

    Stunning and memorable.

Does anyone have the new Hitchcock remasters..."Rebecca" and "Notorius" ?

    What do you think ?

    Al,

DVDEmpire.com has sent out an email explaining the delay for Belle De Jour. They said they expect to have the disc on Jan. 22 and to send it out as soon as that day.
