And here we go with the annual laundry list. Revisiting my prior lists, regardless of reality, and noting that some of the items from the last couple of years actually have been picked up, just not by Criterion. (I’ve also noted that with the online streaming service they had through Filmstruck and will again on their own, there are further opportunities past the actual discs…) (And understanding that some of these are Paramount titles that we don’t tend to see getting Criterion releases, and that we really don’t tend to see much from the major studios going to Criterion these days…)
1. Hard Eight
2. Croupier
3. Kubrick’s Lolita (I had thought we would see this in 2018, and I still think we will see something coming of this. I also think there is a good chance we’ll see them re-issue their Spartacus, using the 2015 Universal transfer and their existing extras)
4. Bird (a full-on expanded Criterion examination of this film, and of Charlie Parker)
5. Adaptation

1. Hard Eight

2. Croupier

3. Kubrick's Lolita (I had thought we would see this in 2018, and I still think we will see something coming of this. I also think there is a good chance we'll see them re-issue their Spartacus, using the 2015 Universal transfer and their existing extras)

4. Bird (a full-on expanded Criterion examination of this film, and of Charlie Parker)

5. Adaptation

6. Popeye (Yes, the Altman one. Just for the bonus features...)

7. David Mamet 3-pack (House of Games, Homicide as upgrades, plus Things Change as a new Criterion)

8. Alec Guiness set (Including Kind Hearts and Coronets)

9. Pinero

10. Dead Calm

11. Never Cry Wolf (yes, it's Disney and unlikely, but it's also a worthy film that begs for examination)

12. The Mosquito Coast

13. The Sugarland Express (yes, a bare bones edition was made available by Universal – I’d like to see something far more in depth…)

14. Sticks and Bones (Robert Downey Sr. TV movie adaptation of David Rabe's play)

15. The Man in the Glass Booth

16. Leaving Las Vegas

17. Shine - upgrade from laserdisc

18. Missing - upgrade

19. Searching for Bobby Fischer (yes, it's Paramount and unlikely, but still a worthy film)

20. Heaven Can Wait (1978 Warren Beatty film - to my knowledge, not available on Blu)

21. The Year of Living Dangerously

22. Iceman (odd and interesting 1984 film from Fred Schepisi

23. Secrets & Lies (Mike Leigh film - and I think this one is coming this year - it was included in the Filmstruck Criterion area with the Criterion logo...)

24. There Will Be Blood and/or Phantom Thread (two very good recent Paul Thomas Anderson films that really only saw a small number of bonus material in their Blu-ray releases)

25. Her (the existing Blu-ray could easily be improved by a much more holistic approach to the bonus features...)

Sigh, you read my mind.

TCM aired Secrets and Lies about a month or two ago and it was preceded by the Criterion logo, so I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Criterion releases that sooner or later. As for my own Criterion wishlist, I continue to hope that they can make a deal with what’s left of the Weinstein company to release the Samuel Bronston epics, especially El Cid and Fall of the Roman Empire with new transfers from their OCN’s. I would also like to see upgrade The Lady Eve (currently my favorite Preston Sturges film) and release the Zeffirelli version of Romeo and Juliet (I read a while back that there’s already a 4K transfer of this, so it just needs to be released, Paramount willing) among other films. I would also put down Dovzhenko’s Earth with the Ovchinnikov score, but I have a feeling that’s not happening since Janus will be touring War and Peace, which I am very excited about.

Edit: Just a heads up Kevin, Kind Hearts and Coronets will be coming from Kino later this year.
