Sorry -- it wasn't obvious to me, but my perceptions are aging along with my body. Now that I read it again, it is pretty clear you were being facetious, which makes me happy! :)

The increased resolution is only part of the appeal of 4K. HDR/Dolby Vision plus expanded color gamut would make a big difference on some titles if done correctly. That is effective no matter the size of your screen. For me that is a much more compelling argument for 4K.

The operative phrase in your reply is "if done correctly." To my eyes, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS and BLADE RUNNER were not done correctly, thus the absence of true reds. I have pretty much already abandoned the format, despite having 65" OLED that can handle it. Blu-ray, "if done correctly," looks every bits as good to me.

What version of War and Peace would they release, if any? If its the Bondarchuk, perhaps they could add Waterloo as a bonus feature!

Klute is a great film, beyond the acting. You should give it a chance.

I think Waterloo should be a standalone release, alongside the Bondarchuk War and Peace, if Criterion does indeed have the rights to the former.

Bondarchuk's War and Peace is apparently a restoration nightmare so who knows what Criterion can (and probably can't) do with it.

Janus recently announced that the new restoration of War & Peace will be premiering in February at the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

Swingtime for sure. At least, that's the wishful thinking part of my brain overpowering reason. Sadly, I can't see Warners relinquishing that title. Just wish they'd do something with it .. and the other F and G titles!

I quite agree that Waterloo will more than likely be a standalone release (a Criterion War and Peace will probably be expensive enough without adding Waterloo to it). Also, Criterion’s releases from Mosfilm seem to go by what Mosfilm has Janus tour (though we’re still waiting on Come and See) so we’ll probably have to wait for Mosfilm’s okay for Janus to tour it since they already have a transfer waiting to be released judging by Mosfilm’s restoration video.

Didn't Mosfilm post all of their War and Peace restoration on Youtube last year? Or was that an older master?

They did indeed put the new restoration up on YouTube, though for a while they did have an older transfer, which has been supplanted by the new transfer.

I would like them to release West Side Story. It was rumored a couple of years ago. Would love War and Peace, and it would be nice if they got the rights to Do The Right Thing again. Their transfer had an orange tint that Universal's doesn't have.

I agree Thomas, and full Dolby Vision HDR, and new upgraded Dolby Atmos or DTSX sound tracks. Just imagine how much better the new Andrei Rublev could have been. (Sarcasm)

For me, it's the Atmos sound, but Atmos can be put on Blu Ray, and Warners, Universal, and Paramount are great with putting Atmos for newer titles on blu ray, Disney, Fox, and Sony not so much. Another issue with 4K UHD for me is that a major studio does a new 4K transfer just for UHD disc and will not upgrade the Blu Ray. Universal with the new Schindler's List is a good example. Criterion does new transfers so UHD would not be beneficial and if you have a player, it will upres so you're getting the same thing. I would like them to embrace some of the immersive sound in their 5.1 mixes of some films, but that's because I do like Atmos and I am more of a Dolby guy than DTS and I know Criterion does DTS Master Audio for their 5.1 mixes.
