    TOOTSIE - Blu–ray & DVD Editions

In Tootsie, the character Michael Dorsey lands the role of a lifetime—as does the actor playing him, Dustin Hoffman. This multilayered comedy from director Sydney Pollack follows the increasingly elaborate deception of a down-on-his-luck New York actor who disguises himself as a woman to get a coveted soap opera gig; while his female persona skyrockets to fame, he finds himself learning to be a better man. Hoffman’s ball-busting yet disarmingly sweet Dorothy Michaels is a sensational comic creation, given support by a stellar cast including Dabney Coleman, Charles Durning, Teri Garr, George Gaynes, Bill Murray, and, in her first Oscar-winning role, Jessica Lange. Imbued with poignant drama, Tootsie is a funny and cutting film from an American moment defined by shifting social and sexual identities.1982 • 116 minutes • Color • Monaural • 2.40:1 aspect ratioSPECIAL EDITION FEATURES• New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray • Audio commentary featuring director Sydney Pollack, taken from Criterion’s 1991 laserdisc edition of the film• New interview with comedy writer Phil Rosenthal• Interview with Dorothy Michaels by film critic Gene Shalit, from the film’s production• Making of “Tootsie,” a 1982 documentary directed by Rocky Lang• A Better Man: The Making of “Tootsie,” a 2007 documentary directed by Charles Kiselyak and featuring interviews with Pollack; actors Dabney Coleman, Teri Garr, Hoffman, and Jessica Lange; and writers Larry Gelbart and Murray Schisgal• Screen and wardrobe test footage of Hoffman• Deleted scenes and trailers• PLUS: An essay by critic Michael Sragow

Funny how Sony's 5.1 remix didn't make the transfer over this time.

I saw Tootsie in NYC (before it opened, at a DGA screening?, memory is fuzzy). What isn't fuzzy was the sight of Jessica Lange arriving in the flesh, wearing a leg cast and walking on crutches, preternaturally beautiful, with porcelain skin. Dustin who?

Ouch. I'm glad I got the European Blu-ray which has the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.0 but no mono. It's a shame that there is no release in HD that has both.

Glad to see they are carrying over the commentary track from the original Criterion laserdisc!

Yes, indeed! I was quite close to bidding on a copy of the laser in order to get that. Pollack gave great comment! :)

Sounds like another winner. I have yet to see a bad transfer of a Sony title.

There is a German edition probably from the same 4K film scan that has 5.0 sound.

You don't remember the days when Sony dropped widescreen transfers in deference to full screen on many DVD's. In terms of Blu-ray, though, they have indeed produced superior quality.

Ron, my pre-order has been officially ordered. Projected delivery date is Dec 5th (sheesh not in time for Thanksgiving...shucks!!).

Would be a great after-football feature on the 70..

Now if Sony/Columbia could just find a way to bring us Skatetown USA onto Blu (4K scan done right of course) and Thank God Its Friday.

I watched this over the weekend. It wasn't quite as laugh-out-loud funny as I remember but it's still a wonderful film. The acting is perfect and I thought Mr. Pollack did an almost perfect job in bringing out the script's full potential.

As to the PQ, I thought it looked virtually flawless. If there's one thing that bothered me it's that it is by far the sharpest film from that era that I've seen. In certain scenes it feels like someone leaned on the contrast boost lever a little too hard. Of course, I've only seen the film on cable/dvd/vhs so I am certainly not an expert but has anyone else watched it yet?

Just a heads up that I found Tootsie (along with It Happened One Night) on Blu-ray at Costco last night for $19.99.

I was going to wait for the summer BN sale, but got it last night instead!
