You're right that the prices of three decades ago don't apply today but I also think it's fair to remind people that home video prices used to be way more than they are today.

Fair enough of course. In our hobby it is easy to forget how good we have it today.

I hope that once this set is released we'll see videos of people showing it so that we'll have a better idea of what we get aside from the movies. If the set is that well done then those videos should also bring in additional customers.

It's also worth noting that this set is licensing studio movies where some titles are only a few years old & somewhat popular so that's likely more expensive than many other titles that Criterion releases.
Most of them have already been licensed by Criterion for years, though. The Royal Tenenbaums has been for more than 20 years, The Life Aquatic for 20 years. They have a very long-standing relationship with the director, and 80% of the movies are now with a single rightholder. Half of the discs (the BDs) will be pretty much repurposed, and the extras for 8 out of 10 movies too.

This is likely to actually be a cost-limited boxset to produce because of all of the above.
