    The 400 Blows
    **Finally Available as Single-disc DVD**
François Truffaut¹s first feature is also his most personal. Told through the eyes of Truffaut¹s cinematic counterpart, Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Léaud), The 400 Blows (Les quatre cents coups) sensitively re-creates the trials of Truffaut¹s own difficult childhood, unsentimentally portraying aloof parents, oppressive teachers, and petty crime. The film marks Truffaut¹s passage from leading critic of the French new wave to his emergence as one of Europe¹s most brilliant auteurs.

    Late Spring
One of the most powerful of Yasujiro Ozu¹s family portraits, Late Spring tells the story of a widowed father who feels compelled to marry off his beloved only daughter. Loyal Ozu players Chishu Ryu and Setsuko Hara command this poignant tale of love and loss in postwar Japan, which remains as potent today as ever‹almost by itself justifying Ozu¹s inclusion in the pantheon of cinema¹s greatest directors.

    Harlan County, U.S.A.
Barbara Kopple¹s Academy Awardwinning Harlan County, USA unflinchingly documents a grueling coal miners¹ strike in a small Kentucky town. With unprecedented access, Kopple and her crew captured the miners¹ sometimes violent struggles with strikebreakers, local police, and company thugs. Featuring a haunting soundtrack with legendary country and bluegrass artists Hazel Dickens, Merle Travis, Sarah Gunning, and Florence Reese, the film is a heartbreaking record of the thirteen-month struggle between a community fighting to survive and a corporation dedicated to the bottom line.

    Viridiana
Banned in Spain and denounced by the Vatican, Luis Buñuel¹s irreverent vision of life as a beggar¹s banquet is regarded by many as his masterpiece. In it, young novice Viridiana does her utmost to maintain her Catholic principles, but her lecherous uncle and a motley assemblage of paupers force her to confront the limits of her idealism. Winner of the Palme d¹or at the 1961 Cannes Film Festival, this anticlerical free-for-all is as shocking today as ever.

It's great that Viridiana is coming from Criterion. I hope this suggests that they might also have plans to release 'The Exterminating Angel', which can be thought of as a kind of companion piece to Viridiana - just as brlliant and just as wickedly subversive.

Just as a P.S. to all this news, I've been told that the latest Criterion newsletter included this line: "Were you Dazed and Confused last month, or just Kicking and Screaming?" Assuming they don't mean the Will Ferrell soccer movie, sounds like Noah Baumbach's first effort (and in my opinion, best) is finally coming out on DVD! [IMG]
