    Written and directed by John Sayles, this wrenching historical drama recounts the true story of a West Virginia coal town where the local miners’ struggle to form a union rose to the pitch of all-out war in 1920. When the town of Matewan’s miners go on strike, organizer Joe Kenehan (Chris Cooper, in his screen debut) arrives to help them, uniting workers white and black, Appalachia-born and immigrant, while urging patience in the face of the coal company’s violent provocations. With a crackerjack ensemble cast—including James Earl Jones, David Strathairn, Mary McDonnell, and Will Oldham—and Oscar-nominated cinematography by Haskell Wexler, Matewantaps into a rich vein of Americana with painstaking attention to local texture, issuing an impassioned cry for justice that still resounds today.

    My favorite John Sayles film and would make a great double feature with Harlan County, USA.

    A great film that I last viewed on DVD last year. I'm really looking forward to purchasing this BD release.

    I watched this film in a movie theater when it came out. There were maybe a handful of other people there. This film needs to be viewed in historical context in regard to the labor movement. Great performances throughout this film.

    I have to admit, I know nothing about this film. However, as soon as I saw James Earl Jones, I was in.

    This film is like a slow burn until the film's climax. Also, this film is the first movie that put Chris Cooper, David Strathaim and Mary McDonnell as well as a few other actors on the movie actor map.

    I remember the first time seeing this when it came out on VHS and rented it from Blockbuster. My current dvd is from 2001 so a much needed upgrade.

    I could've guessed this one.
    After all, when it comes to Criterion, July has always been a good month for Sayles.;)

    P.S. I'm not even going to wait for the reviews on this purchase;
    as such logic only becomes further evident when listening to the "HTF Podcast Episode 5: Visiting Criterion Collection".:thumbs-up-smiley:

    Great film. Pity how much we have lost since then.

    There's a thread in this forum about how sad it is that most of Sayles' films are not on blu-ray. So, the announcement of a Criterion blu-ray of Matewan is like an answered prayer! Now if we can just get City of Hope and many of the others!

    Very happy to see that this film is getting released. I haven't seen this in ages and I am looking forward to a revisit with a better presentation. (Only viewing has been on broadcast, missed it theatrically.)

    This has all the earmarks of an RCR, so I'm down for a blind buy.

    I've had the laserdisc for a long time. I've wanted it on blu for some years, this is a day one for me. One of my favorite films.

    Yes, that would be mine. Robert Crawford and I both purchased the Canadian DVD (the first anamorphic release of the film) and thought it looked amazingly good, but this announcement obviously tops it. Commentary by Sayles and Wexler! This and the von Sternberg silent will be on my shelves in October.
