With her Oscar-winning turn in Klute, Jane Fonda arrived full-fledged as a new kind of movie star. Bringing nervy audacity and counterculture style to the role of Bree Daniels—a call girl and aspiring actor who becomes the focal point of a missing-person investigation when detective John Klute (Donald Sutherland) turns up at her door—Fonda made the film her own, putting an independent woman and escort on-screen with a frankness that had not yet been attempted in Hollywood. Suffused with paranoia by the conspiracy-thriller specialist Alan J. Pakula, and lensed by master cinematographer Gordon Willis, Klute is a character study thick with dread, capturing the mood of early-1970s New York and the predicament of a woman trying to find her own way on the fringes of society.

Roy Schneider was in Klute & The French Connection in the same year. A very good start for the actor.

I almost bought the HD streaming version from iTunes within the last week, but I didn't. These bonuses seem to be worth waiting for.

There were several times Klute went on sale at iTunes and my finger hovered over the buy button, but this is one of the times I got lucky and my decision to wait paid off!

I just don't know why I haven't been able to warm up to this film, ever since seeing it theatrically, I've tried. Every few years I watched it, hoping I'd suddenly have an epiphany. I've always liked Fonda & Sutherland, and I don't think the rest of he cast is my issue. Dark and murky image? Maybe. Assonant music score? Maybe. Peculiar atmosphere? Whatever the reason, I'll skip this, but nice to see it has a Blu release now for its many fans.

EUROPA EUROPA...now there is a movie I will be in line to buy at B&N in July. FYI: I am led to believe that the proper pronunciation of the director's name is "An-yesh-ka" Holland.

You're more resolute than I am! I too didn't like Klute when it first came out - and to such acclaim - and I've never bothered to try again. I wouldn't mind another viewing, but not to the extent of buying a disc I'll probably watch only once.

Great film. I hope Criterion can get Pakula's master work, The Parallax View.

Loved it when it first came out. Didn't bother to get the DVD as Gordon Willis' amazing cinematography (I think one critic complained he or she needed a flashlight to see what was happening) wouldn't have come across. And now with Criterion releasing it, of course it will. Also love Michael Small's minor-keyed but certainly not dissonant score. Come to think of it, my favorite 70's thrillers all have scores by Michael Small: KLUTE, THE PARALLAX VIEW, NIGHT MOVES, THE DROWNING POOL, THE DRIVER...

Now THAT would be cool, especially considering Criterion hasn't licensed a Paramount title for years.
