Keep in mind that Criterion is now a slightly different Criterion.
One of the reasons i went to laserdisc many years ago was Criterion releasing many films i like and in their original aspect ratio and the wide variety of films like North by Northwest, L'Avventura, Goldfinger, Blade Runner, 8 1/2 and Lawrence of Arabia. Now days they want to attract a wider range of folks and to make a profit with more diverse selection of films. The 40-Film Collection is nice but i hope they will do another Essential box set like they did with Fellini and maybe Preston Sturges or Francois Truffaut?

$350 if purchased at the Barnes and Noble sale in November, around $8.75 per title. At that price, it is a great deal.

No, it'd be $400 -- the MSRP is actually $800 -- though $50 is not quite that huge a diff for such a large set.

My guess would be libraries. It's a solid, diverse group of films, and the list price ($800) works out to $20 per film, so it's cheaper than buying the films individually.

Good point. Certainly would make sense for libraries... even if they already have several titles in their collections... although I'm not really aware how they handle packaging. Do they usually not prefer to use the original, fairly uniform, amaray-type cases, which they'd need to buy separately in this case? Still, cases aren't that expensive (relative to the savings here), so...

OTOH, I wonder if libraries are simply moving toward streaming instead. In this case, they could probably just work out some deal w/ Criterion to provide some library-centric/branded(?) version of TCC to the public perhaps...

The good news for me is I only have 2 of the films in this collection (Red Shoes in 4k, and In The Mood for Love). The bad news is that it's still a big chunk of change. They could sweeten the pot by throwing in the 4K versions of the films that have them into the mix. I suppose I can hold off on purchasing any that's already on this list for me to save up for, as a B&N 50% sale would bring this down to $10 per title.

Speaking of Art House collections, why haven't they done one for Charlie Chaplin's films?

As a longtime CC collector, I already have 29 of the 40. Now if this had been 40 of their titles that seem to be stuck in dvd purgatory upgraded to BD I’d be all over it.

I would definitely consider buying the set if it comes w/ new, significantly better "restoration" masters from new 4K scans for at least a few specific cases -- I don't necessarily need 4K discs for any of them. In that case, I'd probably also end up putting all the discs into their own separate amaray cases (or replacing the 10-15 or so old discs I already own, a few of which were not Criterion releases) for my shelves...
