The most personal film by the underworld poet Jean-Pierre Melville, who had participated in the French Resistance himself, this tragic masterpiece, based on a novel by Joseph Kessel, recounts the struggles and sacrifices of those who fought in the Resistance. Lino Ventura, Paul Meurisse, Jean-Pierre Cassel, and the incomparable Simone Signoret star as intrepid underground fighters who must grapple with their conception of honor in their battle against Hitler’s regime. Long underappreciated in France and unseen in the United States, the atmospheric and gripping thriller Army of Shadowsis now widely recognized as the summit of Melville’s career, channeling the exquisite minimalism of his gangster films to create an unsparing tale of defiance in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds

I suppose this is the exact same release as the OOP one?

Obviously Criterion just regained the license for a while. I don't think much effort is going into its reissue.

I have to admit that I'm a bit confused as to why a new pressing of a previously OOP release is being afforded one of the five new release slots. I would have thought a simple mention of the release going back into print in a newsletter would have sufficed.

I would imagine that it is because they are working on 4 boxsets, two of which, Fellini and Varda, are possibly going to be Bergman-sized.

That thought did cross my mind. Anyway, given the largely positive reception this news has had, I'm actually curious to see the film now!

Well as long as we get the affected Godard films and Ran back into print. Last Year at Marienbad is already a lost cause.

I think this is Melville's masterpiece and one of the great WWII movies. If you stream, it is currently on the Criterion Channel (along with the rest of Melville's filmography.)
