I'm a fan of del Toro's films, for the most part. This movie was so bad, I found it upsetting. Completely predictable story. Why invest 3 years of a career making this?

I think he did it because of the genre. He's been indulging in his favorite kinds of stories and movies.
For me, the movie was incredibly beautiful to see and hear but just had no substance under the hood.

The scariest moment in this film for me was the incredibly graphic death of a character early in the film, having nothing to do with ghosts. This is nearly as grisly as the first death in PAN'S LAYRINTH.

I like the film, but I've enjoyed all of de Toro's films except BLADE II. And you know there won't be a sequel -- this, like LABYRINTH -- is a stand-alone, which today is a breath of fresh air.
