This past week I watched four more westerns. Three of them were from my "all-time 100 westerns listing".

First up is "The Gunfight at Dodge City" (1959) a fictionalized storyline of Bat Masterson's time in Dodge City without hardly a mention of Wyatt Earp. I've seen this movie a couple of times beforehand. I'm "meh" about it as I don't think it works quite as well as another fictional storyline about Wyatt Earp in the movie "Wichita" (1955). Both movies stars Joel McCrea. However, a think the latter western is a better movie with a stronger and longer cast of actors. Don't get me wrong, the cast of "The Gunfight at Dodge City" is good, but limited in numbers with John McIntire, Julie Adams, Nancy Gates, and Richard Anderson. One of the first times, I ever remember Anderson playing a "baddie" and a gunslinger at that. Anyhow, a mediocre western that I watched on Blu-ray released by Kino in 2015.

Since my boyhood, "South of St. Louis" (1949) has been a favorite western of mine. The movie takes place in south Texas during and right after the Civil War. The storyline is about three friends who own a ranch named "3 Bells" in which each friend has a little bell attached to the spur of their right boot. The tingle of those little bells is a running theme throughout the movie including the final gunfight climax. After their ranch is burnt out, the war forces each of them to go in a different direction in which betrayal comes between them as their friendship and partnership has dissolved. Joel McCrea, Zachary Scott and Douglas Kennedy play the three friends. Alexis Smith and Dorothy Malone play the women in their lives. With added support of Victor Jory and Bob Steele playing their usual "baddie" roles along with Alan Hale and Art Smith. The 2014 Olive Blu-ray isn't a pristine presentation of this Technicolor movie, but it's far better than any previous viewing of it I had of it over the years as I don't believe it ever got a legitimate DVD release. I believe it was in PD hell for a while as United States Pictured produced the film when it was made, with Warner distributing it to movie theaters. I'm pleased with the video presentation with a grade of 3.5, but somebody like RAH would probably give it a grade of 2.5. It looked good on my 55" OLED in which my sitting position was just 3-4 feet away from the display.

There isn't a lot of action in "The King and Four Queens" (1956) starring Clark Gable, Eleanor Parker, Jo Van Fleet, Jean Willies, Barbara Nichols and Sara Shane. However, even with its lack of action, I always had great fondness of this western probably because of the women in this cast, particularly, Eleanor Parker and Jo Van Fleet which is why it's on my below list. The storyline is about a gambler that goes to a former bandit hideout/ranch in which he encounters the young widows of four outlawed brothers and those brothers very protective mother. The gambler's goal is to steal the $100,00 taken in those brothers last robbery and rumored to be buried at their hideout/ranch. When the brothers were killed by a posse they only discovered three bodies in that burnt out barn, so the rumor is one of the brothers escaped so their mother is holding onto their stolen fortune for that missing brother's return. Like I said, not much action, but I love the back and fourth between Gable's character and the five women. My affinity for Eleanor Parker probably helps in that regard too. :D The 2016 Olive Blu-ray's video presentation is mediocre at best for this Cinemascope film. My video grade is 2.75, but I seriously doubt we're going to get a better video release.

The fourth western this past week was "The Last Wagon" (1956) starring Richard Widmark, Felicia Farr, Susan Kohner, Tommy Rettig and Nick Adams. This Fox Cinemascope movie directed by Delmar Daves takes place in 1873 Arizona during the outbreak of an Apace uprising. Comanche Todd played by Widmark is taken into custody after killing three brothers in an act of vengeance. A forth brother, a local sheriff takes him into custody as they meet a small wagon train going west. There he encounters six young people, who's very existence is depended upon a white man that has lived with the Comanches for 20 years. IMO, a fine western with plenty of action and some really good dialogue which is why it's on my list below. The acting performances are top notch, particularly by Widmark, Farr and Kohner. Felicia Farr didn't make a lot of movies, but I enjoy watching this attractive actress in every movie she's been in. It's too bad she married some actor named Jack Lemmon that basically ended her movie career. ;) I watched my 2016 German Region "B" Blu-ray from Koch. The video presentation was better than "The King and Four Queens" as my video grade is 3.5. I would buy it again on BD, if it ever got a Region "A" BD release which I seriously doubt is ever going to happen now that Disney has it's home video rights.

My plans for weekend viewing includes one or two more westerns off my "all-time 100 favorite westerns" listing. However, up next is my "Noir Alley" title selection "So Dark the Night" (1946). I bought this Arrow Blu-ray in 2019, so it's finally time to watch this Blu-ray. I'm looking forward to revisiting this movie as I only watched it one time beforehand. I hope to take a deep dive into this Blu-ray's bonus material too.

My Noir Alley selection this weekend is Call Northside 777 on DVD. I haven't watched it in awhile, and I love its convoluted path to the truth.

Yes, a fine movie indeed as this "B" Columbia movie was better than what I remembered it being. I should have known better because Joseph H. Lewis was at the top of his game in 1946, and that was before he directed "Gun Crazy" and "The Big Combo". Also, a terrific 20 minute featurette with Imogen Sara Smith talking about Columbia's film noirs and Lewis as a director. I was going to watch the movie again because of the audio commentary, but I got hung up watching some sports this afternoon so I ran out of time. I'll listen to the disc's commentary the next time I watch this 70 minute film again. Also, the video presentation was good enough for me to give it a 4.0 video rating.

This evening I watched "Another Thin Man" (1939) on WA Blu-ray. It was a wonderful experience as the video and audio presentations were so pristine, it was like watching the movie for the first time. Warner Archive really aced this BD release.

I have to admit that "Only the Valiant" (1951) is one brutal western especially considering the year it was filmed. Starring Gregory Peck, Barbara Payton, Ward Bond, Lon Chaney Jr. Gig Young, Jeff Corey, Neville Brand, Steve Brodie and Michael Ansara. This western's tale is about a suicide mission in which a small detachment of soldiers have to guard a narrow pass to prevent hundreds of Apaches from attacking their fort. Gregory Peck plays the captain in charge of this small group of troopers with each one of them harboring a strong hatred towards Peck's character. Plenty of action in this one which is why I always liked this western and why it's on my listing below. One thing the director Gordon Douglas knew how to do well is to direct great action sequences. This movie was produced by William Cagney, James younger brother.

The 2013 Olive Blu-ray is like many of their Blu-ray releases. Not great and more mediocre with its video presentation. My video presentation grade is 3.0 overall, but there are many sequences that looked great while a few others that didn't look good with plenty of what I describe video noise.

After watching "The Last Wagon", I'm in the mood for some more Delmer Daves westerns. I'm in the middle of watching "Cowboy" (1958). I will most likely follow that up this week with "3:10 to Yuma" (1957), "Broken Arrow" (1950) and "Jubal" (1956). He also directed "The Hanging Tree" (1959) along with some other westerns. IMO, Daves was really an underrated director from the "Golden Age of Hollywood". Many of his films are not only among my favorite westerns, but movies as a whole including some of his later movies like "Parrish" and "A Summer Place"

Well, instead of watching that sorry-ass Oscar show which I have zero respect for now, I watched three more of my favorite westerns. All starring Glenn Ford with cinematographer Charles Lawton Jr. and directed by Delmer Daves. All three westerns came in consecutive years from 1956 to 1958. Talk about a good three year run. I'll have more to say later on as I'm just dead tired right now.

Only one western today, "Broken Arrow" (1950) starring James Stewart, Jeff Chandler and Debra Paget. Movie about Tom Jeffords helping to broker a peace treaty between the Army and Cochise, Chief of the Chiricahua Apache in the early 1870's. Some of the movie is based on historical facts, but Hollywood storytelling fictionalized a good portion of the movie. One of the first westerns to portray the Native Americans as people and not just blood-thirsty savages. Though, the lead Native American chief is played by a Jewish guy from Brooklyn. :) It is not one of my favorite westerns listed below, but I wanted to finish up my film salute to westerns directed by Delmer Daves. This viewing was from the 2017 Kino Blu-ray. Not a pristine video presentation of this Technicolor film, but I'm happy enough with it to give a solid 4.0 video grade.

This was the second James Stewart western released in 1950, along with Broken Arrow. It's probably my favorite of the Mann/Stewart westerns they made together which is why it's listed below. For the life of me, I don't understand how this movie hasn't already been released on Blu-ray. The iTunes HD Digital looked nice, but a good looking BD disc would look better on my OLED. Anyhow, this excellent western stars James Stewart, Shelley Winters, Dan Duryea, Stephen McNally, Millard Mitchell, Charles Drake, John McIntire and Jay C. Flippen. Also, a couple of future movie stars made brief appearances in this film, Rock Hudson and Tony Curtis. The premise of the movie is about a stolen Winchester 73 rifle and its journey through different hands throughout the movie as one man is determine to hunt down the thief that initially stolen the rifle from him and to settle an old score between the two of them. Simply a very fine western film with some humor, good dialogue and action sequences along with an excellent cast of actors.

Yet again I was in the mood to watch one of my all-time favorite westerns and John Wayne movies. I watch this movie at least once a year as it's been a favorite of mine since I was about 9 or 10 years old when I first viewed it on the Million Dollar Movie back in the mid-1960s. The Duke was great in this movie, but it was the beautiful Ella Raines that really caught my attention at such a young age. Earlier today, my discussion about Raines in another movie thread got me in the mood to watch this personal favorite again. This 1947 western also has Ward Bond and Gabby Hayes in the cast. It's about a tall stranger that comes to a new town to work as a foreman on a ranch, when he discovers on his arrival that the ranch's owner has been murdered. Determined to find out the truth about that murder leads him into conflict as well as a romantic entanglement with two beautiful women. The latter is a nice problem to have, but the Rocklin character doesn't feel sorry for anything that happens to a woman. Of course, that's a lie! :D The iTunes HD Digital of this RKO movie delivers a good video presentation. Yes, another film title that has never been released on Blu-ray and I seriously doubt it will ever get such a release.

The third western I watched on Tuesday was "Walk the Proud Land" (1956) starring Audie Murphy, Anne Bancroft, Pat Crowley and Charles Drake. This western's story is about John Clum, the Indian Agent for the San Carlos Reservation which was the home to hundreds of Apaches as Clum tries to organize that reservation desoute the political corruption and Army presence. The movie has some historical accuracy, but again, there was plenty of Hollywood liberty taken with the screenplay. Clum was one unique historical character as his involvement with the Apaches and later on with his friend Wyatt Earp in Tombstone is well documented in western films. The video presentation of this Region 2 DVD sucks. I don't know if the Universal Vault DVD is any better as I wonder if it's in OAR. The Odeon DVD was at least 2.35 aspect ratio for this CinemaScope film. The movie was not a box office success because Murphy didn't use any guns in the movie, but I like this movie despite its faults which is why its listed below. Having Anne Bancroft playing a Native American is one of those faults along with other white actors doing the same. No wonder Bancroft left Hollywood for Broadway before she returned to Hollywood in the 1960s as she was frustrated with the movie roles she was getting in the 1950s. I'm glad she returned because she is one of my favorite actresses from that film era. Below is some pictures of the real John Clum with some San Carlos policemen and his friend Wyatt Earp in Alaska.

I watched Tall In The Saddle a few weeks ago. A Great John Wayne Movie!!!
Really excellent movie that I also would like on Blu Ray. Robert you don’t think the chances are that good that Warner Archive will release Tall In The Saddle on Blu Ray?
Is it because you think Warner Archive will not be releasing new Blu Rays much longer?
Thanks!

WA could surprise me, but I'm not optimistic as it's not a musical.;)

Jubal was one of the best blind purchases I’ve ever made. It’s one of my favorite westerns now.

Glenn Ford is great in it, but Ernest Borgnine is even better. The scene where he confronts Ford after his wife convinces him that Ford has betrayed him is a masterclass in acting. Such anger and heartache at the same time. And in such stark contrast to the happy go lucky fellow he’d been up until then. Wow.

This morning I watched the first of four Robert Taylor westerns on my listing which is "Ambush" (1950) also starring John Hodiak, Arlene Dahl, Don Taylor, Jean Hagen, John McIntire and Leon Ames. Another Arizona tale of renegade Apaches against the US Calvary with Taylor playing the savvy army scout, John Hodiak the straight lace officer, Dahl the love interest between the two men with Taylor playing a young officer with romantic issues involving the wife of an enlisted man. Despite the romantic entanglements in this western there are plenty of great action sequences in this movie which is probably why I always liked this particular western so much. This black and white MGM movie directed by Sam Wood which was his last directed film, as he died about a month or so after filming was completed during the summer of 1949. The movie was filmed in Simi Valley, CA and in New Mexico. The WA DVD released in 2011 has a decent video presentation, but could use a touch up if it's ever released on Blu-ray. As I stated earlier, I have three more Robert Taylor westerns on my list below which are "The Last Hunt", "Westward the Women" and "Devil's Doorway". Not on my list are two other Taylor westerns that I like which are "The Law and Jake Wade" and "The Hangman". There is a possibility that either or both of them could be substitutes for any western currently listed below that I've changed my mind on being part of the "All-Time 100 Favorite Westerns". I won't make that final determination until late December, after I watched all those listed westerns plus a number of other westerns that aren't listed below.

I like Ambush a lot. In particular I love the reversal of convention in the outcome of the fight between the obviously tough scout and the by-the-book officer.

My second western on Wednesday was "Kit Carson" (1940) starring Jon Hall, Lynn Bari, Dana Andrews, Ward Bond, Clayton Moore and Harold Huber. This action packed western was produced independently by Edward Small and distributed by United Artists. However, this movie has fallen in PD Hell so all of my previous viewings on TV have been mediocre at best. My Wednesday viewing was from a 2013 DVD released by Hen's Tooth. Surprising, this DVD's video presentation wasn't as poorly as I thought it would be because it looked good for the most part, far better than some previous viewings from a TCM showing that I recorded on a DVD-R. I'm going to give this 2013 DVD an overall 3.0 video grade even with a few scenes that were less than mediocre.

I almost forgot to talk about the movie which has three historical characters in it. Kit Carson, Jim Bridger and John C. Fremont. The storyline focuses on Kit Carson/Jon Hall and his two buddies Ape/Ward Bond and Lopez/Harold Huber leading a wagon train to California with Captain Fremont/Dana Andrews mapping their route along the way. During the course of their journey there is a major Indian fight, but they finally reach California where Americans come under attack by General Castro at the beginning of the Mexican-American War. The movie has some historical facts, but also plenty of Hollywood BS, when it comes to historical accuracy. Lynn Bari plays the love interest for both, Carson and Fremont. Like I said, not historically accurate, but entertaining with plenty of action sequences throughout the movie which is why this western is listed below.

On Thursday, I watched two more westerns from my listing below. First up was "The Fastest Gun Alive" (1956) starring Glenn Ford, Broderick Crawford, Jeanne Crain, John Dehner, Noah Beery Jr., Leif Erickson, Russ Tamblyn and a host of other fine character actors. The movie's storyline centers around a sociopathic gunslinger that needs to be the "fastest gun" alive and he does so by challenging other gunslingers across the west. In a small town, there is a quiet storeowner that is running away from his past in which he sees himself as a failure with a guilty conscience for not upholding his family's name as well as his skill with a six shooter. The gunslinger and the storeowner cross paths and a final gunfight takes place between them. A damn good western with some fine acting performances with a moral message against gunplay. The 2009 WA DVD's video presentation is so good, I wish this movie title was released on Blu-ray as my video grade is 4.0. I do wonder why iTunes doesn't have the HD digital for sale like it does some other WA titles?

My second western was "Broken Lance" (1954) starring Spencer Tracy, Richard Widmark, Robert Wagner, Jean Peters, Katy Jurado, Hugh O'Brian and Earl Holliman. This western is basically a remake of "House of Strangers", the 1949 movie starring Edward G. Robinson and Richard Conte. A land baron has four sons, three of them from his first wife that died many years ago and his fourth son from his marriage to a Comanche Chief's daughter. The land baron rules his ranching empire and his four sons with an iron fist that causes internal family conflicts that eventually splits the family apart. Racial bigotry is on display throughout the movie as the land baron eventually loses his control over his ranch as well as his sons. Fine performances throughout the movie with some fantastic color cinematography. The video presentation of this CinemaScope movie is excellent on this 2015 Twilight Time Blu-ray. My video grade is 4.5 out of 5. Simply a great looking Blu-ray!
