That is what’s great about movies, we can feel or gather different things from them. The subjective nature on how we respond to the same movie should never be discounted or minimized.

Reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock always saying that he saw "Psycho" as a comedy ;)

Agreed. I can find different things in a good film each time I watch it!

I recorded the TCM showing of Farewell, My Lovely this past weekend thinking it was an HD of the original, only to discover it's the color remake with Mitchum. Is it worth seeing? Or delete?

I’m not sure about which film you are referring to.

There isn’t another film called Farewell, My Lovely.

The novel Farewell, My Lovely had been filmed twice before as The Falcon Takes Over (starring George Sanders - available on DVD from WAC) and as Murder, My Sweet (starring Dick Powell - available on Blu from WAC).

The Mitchum version of the story is very good.

As for same-named films, Mitchum did star in a remake of The Big Sleep (the Bogart is a classic, the remake is so-so)

Thanks, I must have been mixing up Murder, My Sweet and The Big Sleep remake. Or Out of the Past. Hey, some days with this iceberg of data dragging my old brain synapses under, it just goes like that.

Another vote for the very good Mitchum version of Farewell, My Lovely. Well worth seeing.

Farewell, My Lovely starring Robert Mitchum is a solid movie that I recommend for viewing.

Okay, but as far as neo--Noirs go, it ain't Chinatown.

Since there is no Noir Alley until March 7th, I decided to watch the Arrow Blu-ray release of "Black Angel" that came in the mail this week. It's a major improvement over the Universal DVD. I listened to the audio commentary by Alan Rode and it was very informative as I didn't realize that June Vincent sung all of those songs in the film including the one by Constance Dowling's character.

I watched my iTunes HD digital of "The Sun Also Rises" today. The video presentation was pretty good, but the audio was so-so. I never cared for this film too much as I didn't like any of the characters in the film. Furthermore, the actors were too old playing those characters. Errol Flynn was excellent though in his part. I know it's been released on Blu-ray in the UK, but it's only been released here in the States on DVD.

The only good thing about Noir Alley being gone for a month is that I don't have to worry about setting the DVR to record it each week. Otherwise, it's a bummer

I have that U.K. Blu-ray disc. Sadly, it's not very good and I suspect it came from an old master. Nothing seriously wrong but it falls way short of the normal standard of picture quality on Blu-ray discs of films from that period.

It's probably derived from the same transfer as this HD digital. Did you watch the BD on your projection? If so then that explains why I thought the video presentation was good because of the smaller OLED screen size I watched it on.
