Two of the finest British crime dramas are making their Stateside DVD debuts from HBO Home Video. The brilliant Helen Mirren stars as Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect: Series One. The complete 208 minute program is presented on a two-disc set with a fullscreen transfer and DD 2.0 audio.

Robbie Coltrane headlines Cracker: The Complete First Season. This three-disc set features the episodes "The Mad Woman in the Attic," "To Say I Love You," and "One Day a Lemming Will Fly". All are presented in 4:3 fullscreen and DD 2.0 audio.

Both are due on October 14th. Prime Suspect retails $29.98 and Cracker $39.98.

Great news on Cracker. I've been waiting patiently for this. Robbie Coltrane is brilliant as Fitz.

For the multi-regional, the entire series of "Prime Suspect" films is available in a R2 U.K. version in a 7 disc set.

I was visiting the motherland a couple of months ago and saw the 7-disc Prime Suspect set, which I think had just come out. I was pretty interested, and wondered if the transfers beat the Anchor Bay discs. I passed on picking up one to bring back, as it wasn't cheap in stores.

Even now, I'm not sure I've read one word of review from anyone who has this set.

I wonder whether HBO will be able to improve on the Anchor Bay discs of Prime Suspect, which looked pretty bad. OTOH, I don't remember the broadcasts looking much better.

Well, they are out today. Has anyone seen them? How is the quality?

I have the Anchor Bay Prime Suspect 1 release. The picture quality was atrocious (as it was on the PBS broadcast, IIRC), and the stereo sound was pretty decent. Is there any improvement with the Warner-BBC R1 version?

    Regards,

I am wondering the same thing: re Prime Suspect.

I did like the look of the new DVD case, but if the transfer is the same, just placed on 2 DVDs instead one part of each side of a single DVD, I cannot really justify a repurchase.

Has anyone seen the new set?

I have the UK release of Cracker (Complete Series, all the storylines in 10 dvd's) and I'm quite happy with the quality: there were a couple of instances when the screen splashed to green and the image pixelated for a second or two but as I recall it happened only twice in 25 episodes. I'm not that picky about image quality, I enjoy the show.
Sadly there's no subtitles in UK set.

Anyone looking to pick up The 'Complete' Prime Suspect may like to know that a brand new Prime Suspect 6 is hitting screens in the UK on November 9 and 10.

Helen Mirren back as Jane Tennison!!
