Could You Be Friends With Sheldon?

Sheldon, from the Big Bang Theory. BBT is a favorite show of mine, but I often find myself getting at least irritated, if not angry, at Sheldon. He is the supreme narcissist. The world revolves about him and any disturbance to his world is not allowed or well tolerated.
Seldom do you see any give on his part, it's all take. I was watching the episode where Leonard is chosen for a trip to the Large Hadron Colider with a guest of his choosing. Sheldon immediately assumes he will be the guest, is mad that he's not, and never changes his position in the show.
At the moment I can't think of a true moment of selfless friendship given by Sheldon. Sheldon is the Sun and his friends are the planets revolving around him.
In real life, would Sheldon have any friends?

No, I wouldn't be his friend.

I just enjoy watching his performance from afar.

Never seen it, but doesn't he have Asperger's? I'm sure that explains his behavior to a large degree.

I'm not sure whether they've specifically broached the subject on the show, but the consensus is definitely that the character has Asperger's.
I've had friends who are, shall we say, mellower versions of Sheldon. But I have a pretty thick skin when it comes to accepting people as long as they aren't actively wronging me.

Very doubtful. To non-emotional, blunt, condescending and just plain mean-spirited. Entertaining to watch, but in life I would never get along with someone like him.
The Bones character on "Bones" is similar, very intelligent, icy personality, but she doesn't have the mean streak Sheldon has. She's just logical, emotion doesn't really come into play. We'd probably get along.

You want to talk about a real S.O.B.....
That doctor on HOUSE. I think that's his actual character name.

I don't watch the show, but my friends do, and I have seen just
enough of this guy to be irritated enough not to want to watch
the show. Never have I seen a television character so demeaning
towards other people. Totally unlikable.

Yes, he's an SOB, but he's fascinating.

I don't think he's mean-spirited, just totally self centered and unaware of the feelings of others. When he demeans the career accomlishments of his friends he's unaware he's hurting their feelings.
Bones is similar but not as self-centered, just socially inept.
I could be friends with Bones because I see that she wants to be better. I'd have to let Sheldon know that I need to see some effort from him to become less self-centered, otherwise, I'd say goodbye.

Interesting Sheldon moment last Thursday -- "Please don't hurt my friend." :)
(No idea if it was a rerun or not, but it reminded me of this thread.)

It was a new show and it kind of shocked me when he said it -- good for him.

I would never be the guy's roommate, but sure I'd be his friend.
I'd definitely need to take breaks from him, but I'd enjoy his enthusiasm regarding science fiction and superheroes. He'd also be fun to mess with. I think with a personality like his I'd tend to look at him as an entertaining eccentric, even when he is talking down to me.
