Corpse Bride is hands down the most charming and likable film this year. It is succinct and very tight piece of filmmaking and storytelling. The economy of plot recalls the early Disney films; it's not a perfect film, at times it feels predictable--but the film is joyously predictable. The best comparison I can think of is that this film is predictable like the bad guy character in Edward Scissorhands is a one-dimensional-stereotype--normally it would be a bad thing, but here it's part of the fun. And the songs aren't perfect, the lyrics are just... off.. in much the same way that the entire tone of the film is off...kilter. But the fact of the songs, their energetic incorporation into the storytelling is breathtaking and delightful to behold. Are they really singable? not so much so, except the 'According to Plan' overture--but they're wonderful to enjoy.

The best moments of the film come when the piano is played by the characters, they are superb examples of 'acting' and the film's finest moments. Although the premise of a 'corpse bride' may be morbid this is easily the most sweet and innocent film in many many years.
